I would be interested to hear the difference in car setup between the ones with the rs3 and the ad08. Also driver experience, etc.

As I have instructed autoX drivers a great deal, and have run with the Mid Ohio School as well, I see more issues with driving style then set up, but depending on setup, this can be exaggerated. Have ran track days with the Z1s and they are known to not like heat as well as the Hankooks, yet I did not have issues like you are describing.

Looks like overworking the car and tires. New to track drivers do that a lot. And overuse their brakes too (drag and cook pads/fluids).

Hotchkis springs are also soft and low. You're transferring a lot of weight on them (some from new driver), lot from suspension.

GRM needs not stop using Civics and Miatas for testing. Those cars react a lot differently than 3000+ cars do.

^^ good point. Also the rs3s were 20mm wider than the other cars, makes a big diff. they all seem fairly close overall though

tirerack usually tests tires with bmw 3 series though, i'm sure they have a pretty comprehensive review somewhere too

The ad08 is driven by an STi driver. Its 255 width tires on 18x9.5 rims, 30psi all around. He also has perrin sways and kw v3 coilovers, -2.5 / -1.6 front/rear camber (0 toe). I have 17x8 255 rs3, 32psi all around. Mods are in my sig. I have -1.8/-1.3 front/rear camber (0 toe). And both of us are on track pads. He definitely didn't brake as hard as I did. I think I was braking way too hard just because I could on track pads. I'm on the same track again tomorrow, I'm going to try upping the tire pressure and braking/turning in smoother/more progressively.

Heres in-car footage:

STi driver (since it doesn't let me embed 2 vids in same post)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRCNMQBMX0E

He stayed out for another 15mins after the vid ends just going and going. When he pitted we compared tires and mine looked like hell. His look just a bit worn.

Also note that 255s... on an 8" wheel = UNHAPPY TIRES....

245's on 9" is more usable and = happier tires...

By the looks of the tire you showed earlier, it sure seems like you are just turning the steering wheel to scrub speed.. :-/

Also as I am only 2min into your video.... a few other free pointers... smooth shifting > fast shifting... It appears you have a 'fast n furious' style shifting... you see yourself and passenger snap around 80% of your shifts... unsettles car and is NOT quick... Also, shifting as you turn in is a bad idea, choose your gear under braking... set it, and then turn in, if you are at the limit of the slip angle of the tire in a turn, shifting is unsettling the car yet again... lots of things I noticed, but still have 10min of video to watch.

almost midnight here, maybe Smike will share some more pointers in bday mode tomorrow.

I lied... as I watched a bit more... TWO HANDS ON THE WHEEL AT ALL TIMES... aside from shifting... you are driving alot with 1 hand on the wheel.. the other on the stick shift, for multiple seconds before you decide whether or not to shift... be confident and know if/when you need to shift, and hand right back to the wheel, no waffling about it...

/free advice for tonight.

Awesome keep it coming.

The fast shifting I dunno how much I can help. Most of that head bob is coming from 20psi of acceleration, then off. My shifts are smooth enough that the rear diff doesn't clunk (stock rear diff bushings).

Haha! You totally outed me on that one hand steering!
