I'm looking to get new tires soon. How come the actual tread width is so inconsistent? For instance:

275/35ZR18 = 9.4" (this is supposed to be the wider tire??)
255/40ZR17 = 10"

DOT calls for 255mm to be section width - measured mid-sidewall to mid-sidewell. Tread cavity (mold shape) is not DOT mandated and varies tire line design to tire line design.

Tread width is grey on what they are measuring. Be it ETP (end of tread pattern) to ETP or top of shoulder blocks or ?

275 is wider.

I really like the rs3 in the dry or damp roads, but they are downright dangerous in heavier rain! I had to pull off the freeway this morning because I was hydroplaning all over the place, but I guess that is to be expected with the minimal tread depth. They fit the bill for me as my evo is not a daily and wanted an affordable max dry grip tire. Running 255/40/17's fwiw

I have yet to track my car with these, am expecting some rollover with the softer sidewalls, we shall see..

Minimal tread depth? They should have 9/32" from the factory, unless you shaved them.

If you mean void area... IMHO it's the compound that makes them suck in the rain, because other summer tires in the same category aren't nearly as bad, with similar void area (RE11, AD08, Z1*, etc)

They sure don't have 9/32 on the the outer area, in the middle maybe. I have been caught in heavy rain in ra-1's before without this kind of drama.

I'm currently at 32 front cold, rears I just dropped to 30 cold.

I was at about 34 cold in the rears and noticed some uneven wear, the outter most part of the tire was darker than the rest so it wasn't making as much contact with the ground causing the uneven wear.

I needed an alignment anyway so I went and got that done and now both the outter and inner edges are wearing unevenly lol.

It's an over inflated tire wear pattern so I just dropped it to 30 psi cold in the rear. I hope this works.

It doesn't really show it in the pic, but the inner edge of the tire is about as dark as the outter edge.
