These tires seems more in line with the Nitto NT01 and the Toyo R888 than the aforementioned Hankook RS-3 and Dunlop Z1. Federal's site seem to suggest a track compound, so I dont think there will be any advantage for autox, there's just not enough heat to ge tthe compound working. However, testing will prove it...so who wants to be the pig?

there is a shop here about an hour from me in SoCal that sells the 595rs-r all day long in most sizes for pretty cheap. I dont know where to get the RS-3 though. I am acually buying new tires this week and am trying to figure out what I want to go with.

where shall I start....
In all honestly these tires are hard to come by and this results in very few and far post about them. One reason why these tires are also hard to come by is because they are simply a top performer tire amongst the larger manufacturers at half the price...
Main reason why the cost is so low isn't because they're from Taiwan or so called cheap. It is due to their low advertisement. Most of your dollars when buying the big name stuff goes into paying for those lucrative commercial deals you see on TV and in your favorite mag...
I am not a avid Auto-X guy but I was given the chance to run these on a Auto-X course setup for nationals during a rather large Southern California Evo meet at El Toro... The size I ran on was a skinny 235/45/17 stock sized tire... End result, besting an avid auto-x'r running on A6's in his Evo X and being in the top 4 coming behind some high HP cars...
The tires have a rather high tread depth, much higher than the Hankook RS-3's... so shaving these would be recommended for Time Attack scenarios... The squirm allows them to heat up rather fast for your application though... and they surprisingly last given the soft compound of the tire...
You can score some of these from www.GRIPPYTIRE.com or www.CITYTIRE.com when available...
So go ahead and be the guinea pig, you won't be disappointed....

This is great to hear! Thanks for the review. I know you said that these have greater tread depth than the RS-3's and also have a 140 wear rating, but how do you think they would do on a daily driver? These would be on summer wheels which would wear these during spring/summer/fall?

Not a huge difference in tread depth...
The Federal 595RS-R tread depth is 8/32'nds for a 255/40/17
The Hankook RS-3 tread depth is 7/32'nds for a 255/40/17
I'm actually going to buy a set of the Federals instead and test them out even though Hankook just came out with a 235 and 245 width RS-3 in a 17" size!

I'm checking with onlinetires.com as well as the other two places o-town listed. I know for a fact when I checked a couple weeks ago, onlinetires.com had them in stock. Just looking for the best deal right now at this point!
These will be going just on a set of stock MR BBS wheels (8" width)...I'm REALLY debating whether I want to go with the 255, or just the 235.
I've ran 255's in the Star Specs, NTO5's and Advan A032R's on the stock wheels. Honestly, you do lose some turn in/response. However, the evo's steering, even with 255's on the stock wheels, is still better than 99% of the cars out there that I've driven; Anything from miata's, to m3's to a GTR.
So most LIKELY I'm going to go with the 255/40/17 again since I'm looking for the most grip I can get since autox takes up a lot of my time on the weekends.
