all the time, pulled belt off, getting a good amount of movement side to side out of the pulley.

Sounds like you may be pioneering this.

Heh... I meant more along the lines of trying a rebuilt pump, but if you got the skills... GO WILD!

Is there even a rebuild kit out there?

Maybe a stupid question, but have you followed the FSM procedure from bleeding the system of air?

Have you tried flushing out the fluid and see if that does anything? there is a little bit of wiggle on the pulley when you move them. there shouldnt be a lot but there is some normally, if thats what concerning you.

the whine is the concern. sounds like I have a supercharger. I didnt flush, however I did bleed it by lifting the front and doing full lock to full lock several times... nothing.

I got the bleeding advice also, albeit on a different kind of car. If you try it for 30 minutes and it doesn't get quieter, chances are it is as quiet as it gets. Not sure what the FSM procedure is for Mitsu.

ive heard that putting grease into the area where the pully meets the pump works... but from what I understand the bearings are sealed...

I was getting no air bubbles even at full lock. they are probably sealed, but it is food for thought.
