Snow + Advans + Cables?

Ok i am going to be in the snow next week and have heard terrible things about the advans and snow. Would i be ok if I put snow cables on the car and if so which wheels, the fronts or the backs or all four? thanks.

GET SOME ALL-SEASONS AT LEAST!!! DO IT FAST!!!!!

In a late snowstorm here in Chicago (April) I wrecked my first EVO.. it was the weirdest and scariest moment in my 11 year experience of driving!!

Just get something quickly!!!!!!!! Don't wait!!!!!!!!!!

You can get sumitomo HTR+ (very good tire in all conditions) shipped to your home from tirerack for under 400 bux! It's very cheap insurance for your investment!

If his location of "the OC" refers to Orange County CA, he's only going to see winter driving conditions if he goes looking for it. No need for all-seasons if you stay at low altitude, you can pretty much run summer tires 365 days a year.

I would not risk running chains or cables on the car. If you want to drive up to Big Bear Lake or something like that, rent a cheap car for the trip.

If you do use cables, do all four tires. But realize that cables (or chains) are only for use when there is actual consistent snow (or slush) accumulation. On dry or wet pavement, on pavement which is mostly clear but with patches of black ice, or on pavement which has only a light powder cover of snow, the cables will wear through before too long (perhaps less than 50 miles), leaving you with the potential for doing some damage to your car as a loose cable or chain starts whipping into your wheel well or your strut.

Considering the soft compound rubber on the Advans, I would not put cables or chains on these tires. I would think it would chew them up pretty badly.

Leave the car at home, ride with someone else if possible.

Yeah, chains/cables on performance based tire = bad results. More than likely going to really chew up the Yokos. Least expensive all season I carry is the Sumitiomo HTR+. Actually, its a great tire to have. They are currently priced for $89 per tire + shipping. At a minimum, you should consider an all season.

Cool My experience on snow

I drove my stock tired evo up to Big Bear in the snow last week. I was way cautious but did do one passing lane adventure. It was interesting to feel the chassis and rear differential working. My car did several little slips and skids but never scared me or used up more space than I had. I definately didn't doze off during the trip, especially going over Onyx summit and at the Santa Ana River crossing going down the back way at 11pm.
I would like to buy a cheap tire and wheel combination for ski trips and to see my son who owns Bear Valley Bikes in Big Bear.

Cheap snow wheels and tires

Would it be possible to find a steel or cheap alloy wheel maybe in 16" diameter that would clear the brakes etcetera. It isn't practical to change the tires on the wheels everytime I want to go up the hill.

There are no chains or cables suitable, but there are some expensive alternatives available. They look like stars and push on from the outside on all four tires. This is less costly than a set of rims and tires if you arent going to do a lot of snow driving.

So has anyone found some good chains/cables that work?

I was thinking all 4 tires with them, as a post above mentioned.

My dad only bought 2 chains for his Pathfinder, 4wd, but I thought he should of bought 4....

What is your guy's opinion on this? And how much where your chains?

Its still snowing here, there is over 6'' on the ground and its still coming down hard..... I need to get food , and to work

soon....

Those are tires? If so I was looking for chains/cables, since I only have the one set of rims, and I don't think the snow will last for too long, it would be much easier with taking off cables then having tires mounted and dismounted....

Dude, there are no safe cables/chains that you can use. It seems like your fishing for some hope where there is not. If you run chains on your advans, your playing with fire. Good luck.

RonV, if you read my post's and my sig at the bottom of my post, you will see that I DO NOT have advans, and yes there is such a thing as "safe" chains/cables you can use, if there wasn't then I would not of seen a dozen or so cars go up and down the hill I live on today.

BTW I am not the one who started this thread, instead of making a new one I just added on to it

Im not planning on driving a long way with them, but I would rather have them on my car and at least have traction. My mom&dad let me use there toyota with studs on it today, and I couldn't even make it into my driveway, its parked in front of house.... Anyway..............
