HKS Hipermaxx RS Clunking Badly... Need Some Advice

So about 100 miles ago I noticed a small clunk coming from the front of the car, it was not too loud so I never really put too much thought to it. I had the car realigned in the mean time and it seemed to get worse. But unfortunatley now it has grown to a full blown problem. I am really looking for help with seeing if there are any tests to do or other options other than just buying new coilovers.

I don't know how long the coilovers have been on the car because I just bout it two months ago.

Clunk started out light in front of car, and has progressively gotten louder its almost unbearable. I can also now feel the clunk in the floorboard every time it happens. Not so much feeling in the steering wheel if at all. This makes me believe something has just came loose.

I inspected the clunk by jacking car up and removing wheel. Put a jackstand under the lower arm and compressed the suspension from there. I could hear the clunk noise coming from what seemed like the main cylinder of the coilover. I am no suspension know it all so sorry I do not know the name of the section. Also I am not 100% positive that it was this because it was loud and was hard to pinpoint an exact location.

When realigned front was set at -2 and 0 toe, rear at -1.6 and 0 toe

Really just looking to see if maybe something has came loose that I need to tighten or to take care of before I just buy another set to replace these. Looked into the cost of rebuild and its not really worth it.

Thank you for your time, I am fairly new to the Evo world so any help is appreciated. I feel like I am constantly learning with this car

Ok an update on this because I drove the car this morning at 6am. The clunk was almost completely unnoticeable but by the time I had gotten to work (10 miles) I started to feel/hear it coming back. I don't know if the fact it was cooler this morning affected anything or just because it sat all night. But this seems to be the norm if the car sits for a bit I wont notice the clunk till I drive it for 10-15 min.

Maybe this information cant help with a diagnosis?

Thanks, Ryan

Check the very top nut on the shaft & see if that's loose.

Bump for some help. Still having the issue, thinking about just picking up a set of fortune 500's to replace the HKS seeing as HKS nor anyone on here seem to have a checklist of solutions to check before I drop money... again.

I have a set of hks coils that came with the car when I got it, i think they're the IIs or IIIs. They were fine for a while but started clunking pretty loudly. At this point I've kinda just learned to deal with it. I've greased everything that should move and tightened everything that shouldn't. I can tell you I've put at least 10k miles on them since the clunking started, and it's never given me a problem other than the noise and that little popping feeling. My personal guess is that its the bearing going bad on the pillowballs.

One oddity for me though, is that it gets quiet when its raining. Like lots of rain, and it stays quiet for a couple of days afterwards, i guess until it totally dries off or something. Rest of the time, I just keep the stereo on real loud. If you find out something that I missed though, keep us posted.

Oh forgot to mention, one of the things i did was have a friend bounce the front of the car up and down and put my finger on the coilover and move it around. The topnut was definitely the source, but it was tight, I almost snapped an allen key trying to tighten it more.

I've been experiencing the same problem too with Ohlins. After driving a few miles, the clunking starts to come up and eventually gets louder. Haven't found where it's coming from though. Also I just crank up the volume just so I won't be annoyed with that noise.

Has anyone found the culprit? Or is it a normal matter which anyone shouldn't be bothered about?

i've only got about 2,000 miles on my Ohlins but they're still dead quiet, and we have some pretty nasty roads up here

OP: if everything is tight (top nut, spring perches etc.), check the camber plate for vertical play. blown bearings knock like crazy

I had the HKS Coilovers with the same clunking noise too. I had about 15k miles on them. i tried everything to fix it, but ended up replacing it. One thing i did try was spray wd40 near the seal area, it would keep it quiet for a couple of days.
