STU wheel recommendation

Hey guys currently I am in Street Modified for autox running 255/35/18 Hankook evo V12's and am going to be upgrading to Hankook RS3's but even those can't make me that competitive compared to these guys on r-comps so I have decided to drop down to STU. The requirement for that is a maximum tread width of 245mm and a minimal tread rating of 140. My question is what would be the widest wheel you guys would recommend for that size tire? At the moment I am running 18X9.5 Rota Grids but am also debating 17's. Any input would be appreciated.

STU rules require running a 17 inch wheel doesn't it, or has that changed? I think wheel width is not limited however. From my experience, everyone I've seen running STU uses 17x9.5.

Nothing in the SCCA rulebook says anything about wheel size only wheel width

Isn't 245 max tire width in STU? Wouldn't 17x9.5 be overkill for that?

Ditch the heavy, weak Rotas. Go for 17x9's fer sherr. Enkei RPF1 for lightweight at a reasonable price. Weds TC105N for lighter weight, stronger, but slightly more spendy.

245 on 9.5 isn't that bad. And look on the bright side, not you can also post pics in the STANCED thread becasue you're stretching tires. LOL

Not one of those guys said which size wheel would perform best. I saw recommendations from 8"-10".

With that out of the way, +1 on the 17 x 9.5s for 245/40/17s.

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't too stretched.

I hear you and I'd probably get 9s, myself, since you won't gain that much lateral grip running 9.5s, instead, and 9s weigh less and cost less. What tire are you thinking about? Some tires are known to run wide and/or not mind being on the smaller-width rim. I know some national drivers are still on 17x8s with RE-11s, but that seems to be underkill to me. RE-11s would probably reach their max grip on 9s, so they'd be a good example of a tire that is happy on a less-that-max-width wheel. However, I've also heard that the StarSpecs like a wider wheel, so if you're going that route, maybe 17x9.5 is right.

I am 100% settled on RS3's. I am just split between just putting a set on my existing Grids which are only $100 more for 18's and in stock or get 17" rpf1's and have to wait for 245/40 RS3's to come back in stock. Since these are only going to be used for events I see no reason to spend the extra cash on Z1's when RS3's have better dry grip.

Who has the best deals on rpf1's? If the price is right I will go 9.5". 9" weight 15.2lbs and 9.5" weight 16lbs.
