Just going to add my .02 here....
Staggered WHEEL setups are fine on AWD, as long as the tire outer diameter is the same. Staggered setups with wider wheels in the rear are absolutely pointless and make your car understeer like a pig. If you're going to do it, run the 18x10.5 up front and 18x9.5 in the rear. It'll give you a little more front grip and help the car rotate. Something tells me that you don't care much about handling though...
Anyway, I run 18x11 front, 18x10 rear with 285/30/18 Hoosiers all the way around when I compete. There are tons of other track and autox cars that do it with great results. The 2010 SCCA Solo SM champ was on 18x10.5 front 18x9.5 rear RPF1s w/ 285 Hoosiers.

For the DD that is sometimes autocrossed, another approach is to get four matching tires and wheels and then add a spacer in the front (only). This allows you to rotate tires front to back while still having the wider track in front. For example, stock wheels with RS-3s and a 20 or 25mm front spacer is not that bad for a semi-competitive STU set-up. Wider wheels would be better, of course, but it's still not bad for a duffer.
