How wide of an R comp can you go on stock wheels?

What is the widest r compound tire you should run on an 8" or 8.5" wheel for autocross? I'm looking to switch to R comps from street tires and I wanted to see if I get an inexpensive set of evo 8/9 wheels and use those, but I would like to try to run 265's which seem to probably be too wide for those 8" wheels. Another option would be for Evo X wheels which are also not horribly expensive but those are only 8.5" wide.

I may just stay on street tires for another season and just save up for some rpf1's in 9 wide and that should be good for what I want to do.

Any thoughts?

What diameter wheel? Probably can't get away with 265's w/out a fender mod also.

Back in the day, the stock class guys used to run 275/40/17s on the stock sized 17x8s.
We autocrossers are crazy. The D-Stock Integra Type-R guys run 275/35/15s on 15x6's.

I personally would not go wider than a 255 on the stock evo 8/9 wheels with a good R compound that has stiffer sidewalls, too wide of a tire will cause the sidewall the fold under heavy loads and could blowout. I'm running 245/40 17 Toyo R1R's on the stockers right now as a daily/weekend warrior tire.

I run 255's on a 9-inch wheel right now. If you can find a set of used X wheels they are 18x8.5 and can easily run a 245/40/18 and you can probably squeeze a 255 on those.

If you stick with an 8-inch wheel I wouldn't go any wider than a 255, after that sidewall flex is more detrimental to grip than the width adds.

Stocker 8/9 which are 8", Evo X's which are 8.5 or I could just wait and get some 9" wide.

Was planning on rolling fenders and doing the front fender mod if needed for 265's. I'd rather not pull fenders if I can get away with just doing the fender mod.

currently running 245 on the stock 8" which from everything I've read is fine although at the 'resonable limit'.

Is 265 resonable for the stock Evo X wheels which are 8.5" wide or to run a 265 safely for autox should I just wait it out for a 9" wide wheel?
