Stuck on autox tire choice
So It is time for new tires and I'm torn between tires. My options are rs3's in 255/40/17, Toyo r1r in 275/40/17, or kumho xs in 275/40/17. The tires will be mounted on 17x9.5 +18 rpf1's. The car sees an autox 1-2 times a month. What would you pick and why?

street mod class? are those the only 3 choices?
shaved rs3's are very good and sticky.
i cant complain with r1r's either.
i think i would choose the rs3's. personal opinion.
but if ur open to other options. then of course the star specs. or even the michelin super sports.
as for size, not sure.
after looking at your sig, seeing as your in street mod, do u not want to run slicks?
the new bfg r1s showed amazing results. a friend ran it and was first in SM, coned away a 1000 pt run :-(

I am in the $600-$750 budget range for tires. I am on my second year now racing and during my first year I was on 235/45/17 rs3's taking top three overall times every event. My rival is an f430 scuderia on 285/315 a6's who I trade off wins with. I could jump up to r comps but I feel it's smarter for me to stay on street tires and focus more on improving my driving. I figure a little more tire should spread the gap a little.

If you don't see rain at your local events, then RS3's are probably the best dry tire in that group. They are supposed to be extremely grippy when hot and price is pretty good as well. The Kumho XS are supposed to be similar to the RS3's but fall a bit short in terms of grip. Of course, the other 2 choices you mentioned are in wider sizes. I would probably lean towards the RS3's since they're the cheapest of the bunch in the sizes you mentioned.

I've used two of the three; R1R and RS3.
R1R is very grippy, but I found the sidewalls too soft, and tread blocks small. Makes for a great rain tire though, and is quite popular for that reason.
RS3 has great grip, but overheats quickly in summer heat. I had a co-driver all last season, and at some events, we couldn't cool the tires down quick enough even with water. Got greasy and stayed that way. The 140 rating does not help wear either, and autox really beats on the corners of the tires.
I don't think the Khumos stand a chance on these two, but I have never used them personally. Just know they're not a popular choice though. Of the other two, I would choose the tire based on other use for the car. If DD, I think the R1R will be better for those rainy days. I also thought they were quieter overall.
Have you thought about the ever popular Dunlop Direzza Z1? Those are very popular and affordable.

Well I've ran an 18x9.5 +20 with a 265/35 tire already and have already rolled the rears so a 275/40/17 should be fine. If it requires i can pull the rears even more. Z1's are a better all around tire but it doesn't grip as well. I wish with such a high demand that hankook would offer larger sizes for a 17" wheel.

for where you live I would say the RS3 or Z1. All the reviews I have read on the r1r say they do good in the wet but fall off fast in the heat if you dont spray them between runs. For me its the R1R because of living in the PNW and running in the rain. I know the xs got a good review but that was on a civic. How know how they will do on a heavy evo.

From what I read both the rs3 and r1r are basically similar as far as max grip and overall track times but the r1r wears out faster and is designed for smaller vehicles.i just wish the rs3 came in a 275. From what I've seen the z1 and Rs3's wear the same. As far as wet traction is concerned I was quite happy with the rs3's in the rain. The good the about street modified is that when it rains the racers go home. Nobody around here cares to run on street tires, he'll the f430 drives to the events on the A6's.
