255/40/17 or 245/45/17 on BBS

I am thinking of going 255/40/17 on my stock BBS wheels. I have the MR suspension with Swift springs.
Tire I am planning on getting is Hankook V12 evo. Car is used for weekend spirited drives only. No track days foreseen anytime soon. I have 245/40/17 Yoko S Drives on at the moment. Would I be better off with the stock 235/45/17 or 245/45/17?

Any suggestions is appreciated. Thanks

Those sizes all should fit your stock BBS wheels. As for which size to pick, its completely up to you. Stock size would be a bit cheaper than the other sizes though. A taller tire will lengthen your gears a bit. I'm on 235/45/17 Hankook V12's on the stock BBS wheels myself and they've been fine.

Here are a couple pics of 255/40 V12s on MR BBS wheels with Bilstein HDs and Swift Spec Rs. When im done with these, Im going to get 245/40s in something stickier than the V12 for AutoX. The 255 looks nice, but a bit too big for the 8" wheel.

Handful of others on 255's with no problems. That's the largest you would want to go w/out issues though.

Will a 235/45/17 provide a smoother ride than a 245/45/17?

For competitive use its better to go with a wider tire. If you are just going to daily it then the stock size is the best choice.

Not a noticeable difference, no.

I think I am going to try out 235/45/17 since it will be a fun street car. I do want the car to turn in fast.

I run 255/40/17 NT05 for my daily drivers. In that tire its a great fit. Others, like the R888 that shave was too wide and the side wall was angles out. Made for a pretty sloppy experience on track. It does depend on the specific tire based on my experience. I also use the NT01 in that size, and it seems to be fine, or better than the R888.

It is the max though. There are valid arguments about diminishing returns on anything bigger than 245 though.

With 255/40R17 - the common upgrade, you will gain a bit of total grip, but lose a bit of turn in response, because the tire is wider than the than the wheel. This size tire really want to be on a 17x9 wheel... But if you put it on a 17x9, then the tire reaches it's full width, and you'll run into rubbing issues.

I ran the old Azeni RT-615's in 255/40R17 on my OE 17x8's, and they did very well - but that was an LT rated model with a reinforced sidewall. The Z1* in 255/40R17 on 17x8 wheels had a perceptible bit of slop on turn in compared to the Azenis's but were good overall. The trick on this tire/wheel combo is to look for a tires with an especially stiff sidewall.
The catch is that with the 255's on an 8" wheel, you are not actually getting all of the extra grip, because the tire is stuffed in there like a doughnut. I went back to 235 to save cash... Until I got 17x9 wheels, which made the extra $120 (and rolling the fenders) totally worth it. The wheel/tire combination is a very substantial upgrade, while the tires alone was a minor upgrade with some drawbacks.

That may have been a typo, but 255/45R17 is "wrong" - in the sense that the radius (circumference, too, batman!) of the tires is substantially larger than stock. The tire will be a taller, bouncier, and have even less turn in response. This is also true of 245/45R17, albeit to a lesser extent. These "tall" tires also change your effective drive ratio and speed-o-meter reading. Look at them on the tire size calculator.

For a 17x8 wheel, the OE 235/45 is what I consider the optimal size for daily driving the evo, and they cost less then the other options as a bonus.

Just to chime in, I bought a set of the Hankooks last night. I've been going with stock size on previous tires (also mounted on the stock BBS wheels), though I had also contemplated the 245/45s for a second (since I got a really good quote for them, about $10 less than the 235/45s), but I read some posts about how it's not the most ideal size, so I just avoided those.

I had the original factory A046s which were eventually replaced by Z1 Star Specs, and these V12s feel lighter than I remember the other tires being, though it's clear that their sidewalls are a lot softer than the A046s and Z1s as well. I'm sure that I'll notice the difference, but I pretty much just do daily driving (evident from both previous types of tires lasting for at least 25,000 miles), so hopefully those differences won't bother me even when I'm having fun in the car.

I ran255 z1 On stock rims and I was impressed once I set tire pressures and did a few laps. It was a beast of a tire combo. The tire was more square than the math suggests. I'd do it again and 275 my 9" rims.

You're talking about the OEM BBS wheels on the Evo X MR, but the OP was talking about the ones on the VIII/IX MR.
