How many run studded tires on awd/ Evo ?

Bought a set of altimax arctic 225 45 17 there's virtually no feedback on this board about studded tires that is other than stud less is better. What about those in areas with minimal state or provincial road maint?

If I lived in your town I'd have a set of wheels with studs on them. Wouldn't run them all winter but I've seen your town covered in ice literally. They would def help you to get around if that happens again

They're too darned loud on clean pavement to be worth it for most people in the lower 48.

Don't really see the point blizzaks or x-ices give virtually the same amount of grip even on ice and you don't have to deal with the noise on pavement.

studs help on glare ice, but are far worse on anything that isnt covered in ice. steel doesnt grip well against concrete and asphalt. you also cant stud used tires.

I did. Because very few Evos in the lower 48 are driven only on unpaved roads.

At this point, I don't know what the question is.

Not many. See comment above on ice to packed snow/clean roads. Studs do not help everywhere.

Run good snow tires without studs is more than enough. If you're worried about ice look at snow tires with extra siping. Those will aid in ice traction. Personally, I run snow tires that handle ice more than heavy snow for my area. When I lived in NH/CT I used heavier snow type tires.

true, but the AWD burnouts at night on clean pavement would be an impressive fireworks show

Every year we test on our ice rink the studded options come in last compared to the studless tires. The rubber technology is so good these days that studs are really a thing of the past. Added noise, decreased handling, quicker wear, etc really makes them antiquated technology.

I've always run studs here in winter until this year. I swapped to a good non studded tire, and I have to say, I haven't noticed a huge difference.

So I gotta say I think Neal is right anymore
