Best street-legal track tire?

Hey guys,
Based off the extensive research I've done, I want to know what you guys think of these options?

1) Toyo Proxes R888
2) Michelin Pilot Sport Cup
3) Hankook RS3
4) Kumho XS

I would be using it mostly for track use only (but I can't go slicks because I'd be using them to drive to the track) here in Northern California. Any experience with any of these? Any other tires I should consider for High performance driving events? Thanks!

Tracked/dd'ed Kumho XS' last summer and they did quite well. Will be switching to Hankook RS3's this summer though as they're pretty much the tire to beat.

Speaking of which, I think you meant to say hankook RS3, not Cooper RS3. The Coopers look like anything but a high performance tire.

Yes, you are right. I meant to say Hankook. Thanks! I will edit that.

I'm with you. I think I'm going to go with the Hankook RS3's because they're symmetrical. The Kumho XS performed equally as good, except for in the rain so that being said, RS3's are for me too. Which size should I get for the stock Evo 9 rim? 235/45/17? Or should I go 245/45/17 for more tread?

Do the Pilot Cup have better traction or heat capability than the Pilot Super Sports?

1) Toyo Proxes R888 - Dedicated track tire that's drivable to the track. Okay to use full tread depth, but will benefit from shaving if looking for optimal dry traction.
2) Michelin Pilot Sport Cup - Dedicated track tire that can be driven to track. Minimal wet traction but can be as quick as a Hoosier in the dry.
3) Hankook RS3 - Extreme performance summer street tire. Great dry/lateral grip, crisp responsiveness, limited wet, average breaking traction.
4) Kumho XS - Extreme performance summer street tire. Great dry and lateral grip, below average wet traction.

1 and 2 will offer best of the bunch in dry, but will wear faster and require a tad more maintenance. 3 and 4 more practical as a dd tire, but you'll trade handling (vs. the track tires) to get better wear. 3 and 4 are more prone to irregular wear in a track environment due to their tread depth and compound.

Neal, what's your opinion between the R888 and Pilot Sport Cup in terms of sheer speed?

The Michelin slightly. However, I don't think the price of the Michelin would buy you that much more dry grip and speed compared to the Toyo.

I was going to say NT01 in 255/40/17. I still think that tire offers more grip than he RS3 but the cost of the NT01 doesn't justify the gains.

If you like the 80/20 rule then the RS3 is a perfect fit. It performs better in hot than the *spec but the they are still very close.

I have run both tires on track and I think the nitto is better.... Though at BIR last year rawkus didn't feel the same way.

In our testing, we had the same lap times comparing the RS3 and the NT01, both at 255/40-17. I'd love to go do some retesting though as that was a few years back.
