245/40/17 RS3v2. No one has had much success on Rivals in an Evo, or really any car for that matter. Most in street tire classes at Nationals were running RS3s. That's why BFG spent an extra day after Nationals doing some testing on the rubbered in Lincoln surface last year.

Dallas- do you have any additional feedback on the R1-R's? I saw you just mentioned them and it appears they have a new 200tw version which looks interesting. Previously the feedback was that they are a good tire but on a heavy car such as ours they didnt work well.
Also, why not bring the ZII's into the mix? I've always been a fan of the star specs, went through a few sets of the ZI's used the ZII's last year and am most likely going to pick up a set of the ZII star specs this season.

The old R1-Rs were great in the rain and seemed to have grip down to the cords but the front weight on the evo is too much for them. They chunked pretty quickly but might survive with a stiffer setup and more camber.
Not sure if the new 200tw version changed at all, guess we'll have to find out.
Im thinking RS3 V2s are the devil you know and star specs have some ground to cover after the temperamental ZII's. I think tire rack did a test on them and said they were the bees knees but itll take some people testing this year to really find result.

I recall reading that they made some improvements over the original R1R's but I'd have to dig up the literature. But apparently Dunlop and Bridgestone are both coming out with yet another new tire. Just kills me bc they will purposely introduce it mid season which means they'll be out of the running in my case since I only go through a set a year.

your local surface is the biggest link to tire choice, just because all of the top Auto-X evo's run the RS3v2, it should not be taken as gospel. Those cars don't deal with any type of "fall off" because they run a new set of tires every event, sometimes even multiple sets in a single event that have been scuffed only (yes i'm bitter I don't have that budget lol).

Not only that, but a lot of top cars run shaved tires. A shave RS3 (down to 4/32, sometimes, 3/32 of tread) that has had no heat cycles is a better performing tire over a full tread (9/32?) new tire, or a used/heat cycled tire with 4/32 of tread..

I have 245/40/17 Rivals on my BBS SE wheels, I couldn't deny the closeout pricing from Tirerack. The 40 sidewall is alittle short but turn is very precise. They were very slippery out of the box though! Pretty sure i scared a guy in a GT3 getting onto the freeway. ahah But got them scrubbed in at an autox test and tune, they're sticky now!. Cant comment on the RS3 vs. Rival as my tire last year was an NT01.

Personally I prefer the Rivals, theyre better at making an idiot (like myself) into a respectable looking driver. The RS3s and the Star Specs both are a very good tire but their window of operation requires a much more skilled driver. Also, the Rivals wear like nothing else.
