Will these fit the EVO. I know that we have 235/45-17 just wanted to go a little wider??? Any help?

 

I'd like to know this as well... I think that they will fit on our stockers but I am not quite sure...

They do fit as I am running the Azenis Sport in that size. Be warned I did notice a small drop off in acceleration off the line due to the taller gearing and extra weight.

 

You'd be better off with 255/40's They are closer to same circumference...tad shorter overall giving better low end acceleration. I run 255/40/17's on the stock rims

 

Okay, I am new to this 1 plus and tires size thing. The first number on the tire is the width in mm, the second is the size of the sidewall in mm, correct. So broeli what you are saying is that I can go up 2 sizes in width and they will fit?

 

im not following. If the total diameter of the wheel and tire is greater, that shouldn't the gearing be SHORTER, and thus HELP acceleration at the expense of top speed?

 

depends on the exact tire, but you'll probably be fine on the stock wheels. keep in mind that in moving to a 245/45/17 you're using a larger diameter tire, meaning you're speedo will read a bit low, you're going to lose a bit of acceleration, you're riding a bit higher, etc...

to my mind, this move does not add up to a performance improvement, but if all you're after is the looks of a wider tire, you should be fine.

now if you're actually after raw performance increase, you could be a real stud and move to a 245/40/17, which will give you a wider tire, less sidewall, a lower ride stance, and quicker acceleration in return for your speedo reading a bit high and a slight decrease in top speed. but most guys are more concerned with how cool their wheel wells look than how their actually handles when driven hard. your call.

i've actually moved to toyo ra-1's in 235/40/17 on the stock wheels for track days, which is an even more radical decrease in diameter, but once i sort the chassis a bit more i'll probably go to new wheels and 255/40/17's, fairly close to the stock diameter, just a hair smaller...

 

Yes. 255 is the width...you can figure that on a 40 series the sidewall height is 40% of the width and on a 45 series it is 45% of the width. So a 235/45 would have a sidewall of 105.75mm, a 245/45 would be 110.25, and a 255/40 would be 102mm. As you can see the 255/40 is closer in overall diameter to the 235/45 more than the 245/45 is. The 255/40 is a 3.75mm shorter while the 245/45 is 4.2mm taller. Either tire will work fine..I guess it just depends on if you want you car geared down a tiny bit or up a tiny bit. The 255 gives the better overall performance because of the wider patch and lower sidewall...also giving it the edge in acceleration. The 245/45 would give you a little higher top speed and at the same speed (60mph for example) you would turn a few rpm's less going down the highway.

 

Okay so what you guys would recommend would be the 255/40-17's correct. I dont care about wheel well gap or any of that crap I just want more of a contact patch and awesome performance.

uh, one thing to consider, guys:

255 is awfully wide for the stock rim width. the toyos, for example, list an 8.5 inch minimum. that's why i've run what i am on the stockers....


not sure about other tires. buyer beware.

 

Especially with how stiff the stock A046s are, going to a wider tire on too narrow a rim is going to give you less than desirable squirm, negating any benefit of grip from a wider tire and giving you worse wear with all the squirm.. A 235/40-17 would be more desirable for handling and wear. plus it improves torque to the ground and lowers the car.

 

How would a 255 be worse for handling and wear? I run 255/40 Kumho Victoracers on the stock rims with no problems at all. Yes an 8.5" rim might be a little better for a 255..but I get full use out of the contact patch and great handling with my Victoracers on the stock rims.
BTW, I get no squirm with my Victoracers
