Question: life of RE71R & 200 treadwear tires in general
Question for those who have experience with RE71R tires or 200 treawear tires in general. I have heard that regardless of miles, treadwear, heat cycles, that 200 treadwear tires are fairly hard and useless after around a year. Is this true?
I have a short commute to work and would like to daily these tires, figuring I could get 8-10K miles out of them with 1-2 HPDE per year, and 4-6 autocrosses per year. But if I can't get at least 2 years out of them, I am thinking I should just go with MPSS...
Thoughts?

I use this tire for Autox only. I've been dual driving now for 6 events and I'm half way through the life of the tire. They don't last long at all. I also know a guy who uses them for autocross and track days while daily driving and got 5500 miles out of a set. The MPSS are great but I think you can look harder and find a good tire. Try the Starspecs, Eagle F1, Falken etc.

Some of what you have described may be just simple tire aging (the oxidation process)
There are no hard & fast rules, but some experts note tires over 6 years old should be replaced due to oxidation
Regardless of tirewear rating, all tires will oxidize, loose their elasticity, get hard & deteriorate
I cant see why there would be a difference in longevity between a 100 tire & a 300 treadwear

Thanks for the input guys.
I guess I should have said I am in so cal as well, so we don't have real cold winters the tires would have to go through.
I have heard that the softer compounds, i.e. 200 TW do get harder faster than harder compounds, but I am not sure if this is true.
So my concern basically is that the tires will still have decent grip at around the two year mark assuming they have not had too many heat cycles and still have tread left. So I should maybe look into Star Specs then instead? How about RE11, S04, RS3, for my use?

There is some truth to that about softer tires getting harder quicker and that they shouldnt ever see temps below I wanna say 40 degrees.
If youre looking to get the most out of the tire than one that is fresh is going to be faster than one that is older and sat for a year. But at the end of the day a 2yo SS will still be faster than a fresh set of PSS.

I have RE11's on my car. About 18 months and 8k miles, still lots of life. I only use them as a street tire though. Can't comment on how they'd
Last for autoX or track days.

I've killed a set of ZIIs (still tread, no grip) in a year of Texas heat and frequent auto-x (2/month). I was happy enough with tread longevity and grip that I purchased the ZII*s and have had them for two years. I put one HPDE and fewer auto-x events on them but they're still grippy. I do not daily drive my car and most of the miles come from driving to events that are usually 200+ mile round trips on the highway.

I DD my ZIIs, about 15 miles per day + canyons and some milder track days once or twice a year.
I'm a year into this current set and they don't feel heat-cycled-out like my RS3s did, tons of tread left, I think they have another year in them even if I increase the track days.

Advans are 180 and I've done 4 track days on them and 6000 klm the centers are less then half worn but the edges have about a third left, the edges are the issue and I have standard size, I'd like about 250 tread wear for the street and 180 to 200 for the track

You all are putting too much weight into treadwear rating. That rating, and the testing that gives the rating is not an industry standard. Different manufacturers use different testing methods. It's only useful when comparing tire's from the same manufacturer.
