Summer tires in a (snowless) winter

My Evo has become my daily driver, and the Advans only have 5,000 miles on them and appear to be in fine shape. I average about 1000 miles a month. The question I have is whether they can weather (pun intended) a relatively snowless winter here in North Carolina. We don't get much snow -- every few years we'll get a storm of a few inches that will essentially shut the city down so I won't even drive until it clears up -- but it does get below 32 for a couple of months and conditions can be either rainy or even occasionally slushy. Can the Advans or any other "summer" performance tire be called upon safely in these conditions, or should I swap them out for ultra high performance all season tires like the Michelin Pilots A/S or Pirelli P-Zero Nero as I get closer to December?

Do cold conditions significantly increase a summer tire's stopping distances and decrease handling?

Yup! There are examples others have posted about driving the advans below 40F.

Yeah...when it's cold out...the Advans like to put people into accidents. They don't like cold weather AT ALL!!!

hey whats up? im from asheboro myself back last winter when i had the advans on my car i managed to find a ditch thankfully it was @ lost speeds and was a very minor hit. Also after that i was leaving work one night semi slushy conditions and it came around because the tires were cold. Somthing i suggest is getting a set of somthing like falken zeix 512's they work very well in the snow we have here i got to try it out in about 7 inches with no problems! they are also a decent evey other time of the year performer.. not the best but by far not the worst. Me personally though i wont run a summer tire again in the winter on my evo no sir....

I drove my stock advans through a snow storm with 12 inches of snow and compacted ice... I slid around a bit but they held up better than I expected no wrecks for me. I just got a set of toyo T1-S I don't know how they do in snow but in rain they are awesome. they don't handle quite as well as the advans but they are cheaper and do way better in rain.
