so that's what's going on... I had the same problem. It also rubbed on the top of the inner fender well.

Broeli - Your point is well taken, but there is not that much difference. The 255/40/17 RA1 has a diameter of 25.1 inches. The 145/45/17 Falken has a diameter of 25.7 inches.

A worn 245/45 Falken has about the same diameter as a new 255/40 RA1.

Well..over 1/2" does make a difference. By eyeballing it, somewhere around 1/2" is about how much clearance I have left between the tire and the black plastic inner fender lining with my 255/40's when it is turned full lock.
Generally speaking, I think a 255/40 tire will be .24 (under 1/4") shorter overall than a 235/45 (stock size). A 245/45 will be .42 taller than the 235/45..or .66 taller than a 255/40. The increased width along with the increased sidewall height will have a higher likelyhood of causing problems. The 255/40 fits better, looks better, imo perform better, and will have less/no chance of rubbing because of the shorter sidewall. I have yet to hear of rubbing issues with a 255/40....245/45 is a different story

I have 255/40/17 T1S on 9" wide rims, no fender rolling, no rubbing.

I decided to try them as I liked the RA1's so much, but it was not what I expected.

Sadly, the contact patch width of the 255 T1S is the same as the stock advans that are 20mm less wide. THis is because the edges are so rounded that 1/2" on eash side is wasted on the t1S. I was hoping to make up for the lesser traction with more tire on the ground, but it did not happen.

Even more dissapointing is the sidewall on the T1S. Figuring it was Toyos summer perfromace tire, I was hoping for a sidewall stiffness like the Ra1 or the stock Advans. But these things turned my EVo into a rental car (well, a bit exagerated) but not what I was hoping for.

Once the tires fold over and the car setles down, the tire is quite nice for a street tire. But the feel just sucks and makes the transitions more dramitc than they need to be. Great wet traction though. I wish they put the T1S tread & compound on the RA1 skeleton.

I just put 255 40 17 RA1s on on my 17X8.5 volks with a 30mm offset and they do rub in the back and need the fenders rolled. The fronts rub aswell (not as much as the rears) so I need to give a couple turns to the coilovers up front.

Xtnct - What rim and offset are you using? Is your car lowered? I want to use the 255/40/17 RA1 on my car with 9 inch rims. Since you found the T1S fits in this size, I assume the RA1 will, as well. Or maybe that is not a good assumption.

That has got to be from the offset of the wheel, hopefully

Enkei RPM2 40mm offset with 3m spacer in front (thus making it a 37mm offset)

No.

You can not assume that. The RA1's are more square than the Toyo T1S. In fact, the T1S is so rounded on the corners that the contact patch width is the same as the stock Advans. Even though the T1S is 20mm wider, because of the rounded edges (instead of being more square like the Advan) leaves the contact patch width the same as the Advans (which is 8" BTW). I have the RA1's for my other car and the tire design is more sqaure than the T1S. How rounded a tire is on the edge may make the difference between rubbing and no rubbing on the fenders. You need to use the inflated section width combined with your wheel numbers to figure out if you will rub on the inside along the strut or the rear control arm. Also remember that you need to leave a few mm of marign for suspension, wheel and tire flex.

Are you running stock camber or have you flipped the camber screw around?

Anyone running the Nitto NT555s in the 255/40/17 size on stock wheels? I have always had good luck runnign Nittos both on the street and at autox events. They seem to last the longest than any other tire I've bought, Toyos, Falkens, Yokos.

FYI, Toyo and Nitto are the same company. Nitto is Toyo's private lable brand.
