well to be honest I don't know how much high speed cruising I'll be doing with the short gears. Seems to eat the fuel at anything over 80 and it will keep me out of trouble. A 6th gear overdrive sure would be nice. I like the first 5 ratios the way they are.

You really do need to mount to the windshield high up. Thats actually the spot that both V1 and Escort recommend for all detectors. I've got mine just below my rear view and hasn't failed my yet. 2 years and absolutely NO tickets.

I've always mounted mine with it just above the wipers so it has a clear view out the front/rear and I run a passport 8500 x50. The cord really isn't that bad, on my X it hangs over part of the radio controls (sorta sucks) but I will be hard wiring it through the dash with the extension power cord shortly to remove this issue.
Turn it up all the way and on the loud setting and you should never NOT be able to hear it trust me. You also shouldn't really need to look at it, if it goes off and is anything other than X band its probably a safe assumption that it's a cop and a good idea to slow down a bit until the radar detector chills out. The reason I say anything other than X band is because X band, typically in my area and most of texas from experience, is almost always a false alarm from a store or some random thing other than a cop.
LIDAR aka Laser is the suck and when it reads laser chances are you're probably already effed. One thing I found out that does trigger laser though that isn't cops is the airplanes that fly over the highway I take on the way to work. Motorcycle cops almost always use laser...just another thing to be leery of. Definately one of my best investments and has saved me plenty of money already ~Trent

Hardwire it, it's pretty easy and even easier if you use a add-a fuse. Took me less than 15 minutes to install my Valentine V1. I got locked on by a LIDAR a few days ago and I almost poop my pants. That's the first Laser I've ever been locked onto here.
