First Mod...already Passport 8500
Got to have one of these on all my `cars. Saved me a couple of times already. I know it won't save me totally but it sure let's me know where the 'man' is especially in fast moving traffic. 300 +tax from Best Buy. Stuck it to the dash temporarily with 2 way tape. I got some Velcro I'm going to use for a cleaner install and so I can yank it off when parked

I guess I could jam it up into the windshield but the windshield is waay out there. I can barely read it as is when I'm moving. And I don't want the cord hanging down. Obvious and distracting.
Right in front of my vision is perfect. If I get pulled over I'll throw a hat over it or something to keep the 'man' from getting all chapped

You could mount it right under the rearview mirror but as you sait the cord would be distracting. Passport does sell a hard-wire kit so you can route the wire along the head liner.
Taking the radar detector down when being pulled over is like putting on sunscreen after you've been in the sun all day...you're already burnt. I've been pulled over a few times and received warnings each time and never once took down my detector.

Hardwire, like Cirrusly suggested. It doesn't cost that much & involves a cord that looks like a phone jack, which is hidden. So all you have to do is pop out the head of the cord & your good to go. Oh, & don't leave it out in the summer sun for too long, 'cuz it might give you error codes - found this out the hard way. Also, volume is key - make sure to turn it up louder when you have your music up, if it doesn't self adjust - I got a ticket this way, which shouldn't have happened.

As far as not picking stuff up from the rear it has already picked up 2 seperate NVHP's coming up behind me from quite a distance. I'm sure if I mounted it near the mirror it would be more effective for sure though. Maybe for now I'll mount it more on center. And later consider a hard wire set up
About the volume. Yes it's got to be up high with all the road noise I found out

Something that took me awhile to find out was that there is a setting for extra loud in the menu of the 8500. I missed a signal once because of my music and it cost me. Then I found out about the volume booster setting. Look into it if you haven't already.
And where you have it now certainly won't keep it from picking up rear signals (due to radar effect) but it probly isn't giving you the best possible range either.

the higher you mount it the better...
I suggest using this to keep it clean looking.

I'll check that loud setting out. Should be great for the freeway. I'm def' gonna mount it as high as I can now after reading that link. I'm new to this radar thing and appreciate the input

Where you mount it on your windshield isn't that relevent as long as it has a clear view ahead and behind. Radar bounces off of everything so mounting it high or low does not provide any benifits. LIDAR however is very focused and since cops will target the front bumper (flattest surface) the lower you have your detector the more likely you are to pick up the signal. But that's pretty pointless too cause once he pegs you with LIDAR you're tagged anyway. Best defense is a LIDAR jammer in conjuntion with your radar detector.
