Can Mitsu track ECU changes?

Okay, need to clarify something...a member at another board (non-evo related) states...

Nope, don't want to void my warranty. Mitsu can now track whether the ECU code has changed. I know that it runs pig rich, but that will save the engine, and I've had my fill of popping engines for the time being.

Plus, I've heard that changing the tune on the MR will make the tranny function strangely--shift points are moved, etc. I'm going to trust the factory on this one.

Personally, I never run across any information resembling this on this forum. Is this true or is he making **** up?

I know that BMW can track... but it's my understanding that the Mitsu ECU can't.

That was my understanding as well. None of the tuners have mentioned Mitsubishi can track this as well. I think the guy might be misunderstood.

Maybe not. My Evo mechanic said, that a tune could leave a weird code in the ecu, which would not say it was tuned, but would give a certain code.

He said they would not know what it was, but imagine that it was a tune.

Who really knows though.

It's called a "Sum Count". This hasn't changed with the X.

Yeah the ECU can simply tell how many times the ECU has been flashed.

Leave a case of [cold] beer in the trunk every time you take your evo in for service. With a 3x5 card on the passenger seat "Free Beer in Trunk".

I wonder if one of the tuners can chime in on this.

I was told that the dealers could tell the ECU was flashed, but it could not be distinguished from a dead battery. So if you told them that you left your lights on all night and the battery died they would not be able to prove otherwise. I do not know if this is definitely true thought. If one of the tuners could help with this that would be awesome

Hi shyong--it's weneversleep who posted this over on that other forum.

I wasn't purposely "making **** up", and I'm glad you asked the experts here.

Is there a consensus? I'd like to know as well, because if I could get a conservative tune that would improve fuel economy, I might be interested.

If I were to do a tune, I would do a piggy back. The ECU does not change and you can pull it off when you take it in.
