Question about test pipe noise

Hey guys,

So I just installed the ultimate racing test pipe yesterday. Everything seems great, there is no CEL or anything like that. The question I have is now that the test pipe is installed, when I'm driving usually half throttle or sometimes shifting gears I hear this sound from the exhaust kinda like a loud bang. I'm wondering if this is normal or not? Thanks

??? I'm gonna go ahead and say that it might be backfiring. You might be running rich like all the other EVO X out there. Do you have the updated flash? Does the car stutter when it does this?

It is a backfire from the unburned fuel igniting at the rear of the exhaust when it gets oxygen. I have a stock tune with the upgraded flashes and my car shoots massive flames. UR downpipe, UR test pipe, and Greddy Ti-C. If I am rolling partial throttle in 1st and step on it...it always shoots a big one on the 1-2 shift.

Funny story...I was headed to the track with some of my friends and was leading the pack. Some girl in a Beetle was all over my *** for 20 miles...so close I couldn't see the front of her car in my rearview. I accelerated to get away from her and heard the fuel ignite. My friend was behind her in his VIII and said that the entire front of her car had flames roll over the top and she slammed on the brakes and swerved to the shoulder. Take that b*tch!

ive got the TI-C. There is usually a nice sounding pop in low gears. you prob just accentuated it w/ the test pipe.

I never had any of this with just an exhaust and a cat. The fuel never made it back to where it could get oxygen. It only did it after the test pipe and will be gone as soon as I can tune the car. I get all kinds of funny looks, thumbs up, etc. when it shoots a bomb from the back I will miss that.

I've got the HFC and have never been accused of shooting flames.

Soot, black puffs of smoke (rich) and backfires yes. Flames, no.

Yeah the HFC snuffs out any flames, but a test pipe and a rich tune will send cool flames out the back.

I haven't had my car tuned yet, but once tuned, I assume the soot and stuff will be less. Am I correct?

Less, sure. But it will most definitely still be there in some form.
