The 2004-2006 STi guys have been trying it for years. It murders your ET and trap speed. This is why those cars do ok in the 1/8th, but absolutely suck in the quarter. Our fifth is way too tall for drag racing.

Finding a way to keep it in fourth is the only solution. I was hoping larger tires would help for a bit, but seems there is rubbing issues. This final drive seems to be the best solution by far.

The best possible transmission (in my opinion) from looking at gear math sheets:

Evo X or IX transmission with Evo VIII third and fourth gears and a 4.42:1 final drive.

Tire Diameter 25.3267
Final Drive Ratio 4.42
1st Gear 2.785
2nd Gear 1.95
3rd Gear 1.407
4th Gear 1.031
5th Gear 0.761

Gear speeds at 7000rpm (redline):
1st- 43.1mph
2nd- 61.5mph
3rd- 85.3mph
4th- 116.4mph
5th- 157.7mph

Gear speeds at 7800rpm (typical reflashed rev limiter):
1st- 48mph
2nd- 68.6mph
3rd- 95mph
4th- 129.7mph
5th- 175.7mph

Gear speeds at 8500rpm (somewhat built engine rev limiter):
1st- 52.3mph
2nd- 74.7mph
3rd- 103.6mph
4th- 141.3mph
5th- 191.5mph

Spinning to 7800 will allow the car to trap deep in the 120s, and is appropriate for an Evo X on a Dom2 with cams, race gas, and supporting mods. It also leaves a few mph to grow on power-wise. Lastly, it will improve fuel economy.

If I had any choice, this is what I would want in my car. I'd hate to go taller without a lot more power and rev limit due to 4.10 FDRs being more for hardcore really deep revving drag cars that can run single digit ETs. I think 4.40s would appeal to 99% of people looking to upgrade in an Evo X. Even with a built engine that can spin to 8500, I will never, ever, ever need to trap higher than 140mph, lol. I also don't see low revving strokers in this car's future, since the 4B11 is square. Let her rev.

My wife drives a 400+whp '06 STi, so I know all about the gearing problems with that car. I am in 5th gear in her car before the 1000' mark as I have no other options... the car is just way too far back to try and stretch fourth.

Final drive swap is going to be the way to go. I'd love to have 135 capable traps at 8K RPM.

I'm going to bump this to see if there are any updates on a revised final drive ratio or a Bushwacker transmission

im just wondering what kind if mileage you are geting in 5th. I personally am getting 26-28mpg in 5th on this amazing 91 west coast octane.... it just takes a little paying attention to throttle position. I've become aware that there is a range in throttle position that doesnt do anything for speed, but lowers gas mileage quite a bit. just have to get used to it i guess

i know 28mpg isnt omg amazing, but when i first got the car i had to completely relearn to drive as i was only geting 16-18. That and 26mpg is more than enough to get me from my place in vegas to my family's place in phoenix on one tank with a few bars left over now. I still remember the first time i drove down there and had to stop halfway for gas...lol that was an interesting trip.

At what cruising speed? I would kill for 26mpg at times...best on long trips I see is about 22-23mpg cruising at 80. Final drive will be in my future for sure, just as soon as its built

I hope the 4.40 final drive comes out before my clutch goes. I'd like to change them both at the same time.

You must drive at about 50mph. Those numbers aren't possible at 75-80 IMO. I track my mileage everyday and have hit 25MPH ave for a 100 mile drive once, and that was with zero boost or stop and go.

Mods and state of tune can impact this quite a bit, I'm managing these numbers for long trips on the highway:

65-70 mph = 28-29 mpg
75 mph = 26-27 mpg
80 mph = 24-25 mpg
