couple of newbie questions
Well, more like a few . So I've been wearing out the search button but I still can't find results that answer my questions to my satisfaction. I come from a 430rwhp LS1 FD RX-7, e36 M3, E46 M3, and am considering a future EVO X.
The car will be used for street driving, auto-x, and occasional track days, (don't care too much about drag strip) and I assume a quicker spooling turbo would fit my needs, but am looking for 420-480awhp on pump. I don't want to bore/stroke, do headwork, or upgrade internals.
(also I've tried looking in the motorsports section, but I can't determine which threads pertain to the EVO X. If anyone knows of some EVO X auto-x threads or posters that talk about upgraded turbos please share )
1. Between a Red, Dom 2, GT30R, or GT35R, what is everyone's opinion on what would work best for my application? I know twin-scroll GT35r's are available, I am not sure how fast they spool...
2. From this thread: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...d-dom-2-a.html
"I wanted to upgrade to a GT30R but everyone seems to be having trouble with them." (post 7)
"So, unless they figure out whats wrong with the GT30R turbos, Im gonna have to go with the Dom 2.0" (post 18)
Are people having problems with the GT30R? I haven't been able to find any in my searches....
3. If possible, I'd like to remain facory-looking since I am in Cali. I know the red, GT30R, and ATP GT35R bolt on kit can maintain this appearance. I was wondering what other kits do as well? Is it known if the AMS 750R kit (looks great), or the upcoming AMS or ETS kits in the dyno section accomplish this?
4. Does upgrading cams or exhaust manifold result in a fail when you need to get your car smogged in CA? (I might need to ask this in the regional forum...)
5. In my searches I've learned that EVO's tend not to like N02, does that extend even to small shots to aid spool up on laggier, larger turbos?
Sorry for all the questions, I swear I searched a ton lol. Thanks in advance!

>420-480awhp on pump
That's a tall order on pump. With E85/Red/cams it could be done. It'd look stock but there aren't any aftermarket X turbos that spool like stock...as soon as there is, I'll buy one. To make that kind of power on pump you're realistically looking at a big turbo and that means aftermarket headers.
Few people use NOS because there are so many other things that you can upgrade to make that power. Add a meth kit, add cams, add a larger turbo, upgrade ignition coils, port your manifolds, change your intake...the list goes on and on whereas with a lot of cars there aren't as many possibilities.

Tubular Exhaust manifold will fail the visual inspection in CA. Most run ported stockers for this reason. I know that there is a hack mod to the ECU so you can pass smog for 8's, 9's, but not sure if it is available for the 10's.
