Has anyone else experienced surface rust on your SS exhaust? I have now with two seperate companies, and was wondering if there is a higher grade stainless used to avoid this, or if it's inevitable when you drive in salt/snow.



Update: not sure if this is surface rust or what, but here is a closeup of the finish on my Buschur Exhaust after a lot of polishing with Mothers and one other brand metal polish. The surface is smooth, but still very discolored and basically looks like crap. Can this be easily fixed?

304 should stay rust-free for a very long time. 409 is cheaper and will rust.

Traction I saw the same thing on my car last winter after like a month of minnesota salt. I will say Milwaukee salt when I lived there for the past five years was a lot worse, Milwaukee loves their salt, they would skip plowing sometimes and just salt the **** out of it, so I feel even worse for you.

Yeah, I think we have the same exhaust too. Even my tips are getting pitted I can't wait to see what they look like after salt season.

Ti everything!!! :-P Amuse Ti Exhaust...do it! You know you want to. Yeah, I'm not looking forward to snow season here....another good reason to gut your stock exhaust and keep the "nice one" for spring/summer and the stocker for winter.

And retune each time, lol, pass. Cheaper to buy new exhaust every two years.

304 SS will show some surface rust if it is not polished. 304 SS is basically an alloy of Nicole and Steel and if it is not polished then the Steel in the alloy is more exposed and will show up as surface rust, but is still considered a rust resistant alloy.

I don't see what the big deal is. It's only a little surface rust, it's not going to eat through your exhaust tubing, especially if it's all stainless. You can't even see your exhaust tubing anyways, don't be so nit picky.

With the exception of the downpipe, my whole exhaust is coated mild steel. No problems here.

It will get surface rust but it will never rust all the way through.

Mine is polished and definitely too expensive to replace every two years. The midpipe did have some scratches on it so we'll see how that holds up this season.

This will be the only year I'll drive this car in the winter...just don't want to buy a second winter car two months after buying this one. The mods broke the bank as it is.

My factory exhaust is rusting on the bottom of the main canister/muffler. Doesn't look too great, especially being it's pretty visible at factory height.

My main concern is the dual tips appear to have some kind of coating that is pitting / flaking and generally looks like crap. Maybe I can just sand / buff it off and polish them.

The underside is no big deal to me except when I sell my old stuff to someone in CA and theyr'e like "wtf?"

Good luck with the coating. I grew up in Buffalo and have replaced my fair share of mild steel exhausts . None have been completely coated though.

Except for my T1R downpipe, I built the rest of the exhaust on my car. My last car had a 3" turboback I built from mild steel and then coated. It held up perfectly fine through 3 winters. If something were to happen, mild steel is cheap and easy to replace. I'm not real worried about it.
