He probably didn't know and guessed. The ones I received we're metal.

Anyone pushing these cars in harsh environments should consider replacing the two plastic idler pulley's with the metal Hyundai ones sooner than later. Having a proper undertray will help the plastic ones stay alive longer as I think the reason Paul's MR had it's issue last year was due to him driving it rally style through the harsh Canadian winters where they pour sand and small gravel on the roads.

How much are these? Sorry if you said in the thread already. My motor is out now so maybe I should just replace them before it goes back in.

Would a worn pulley or belt cause strange noises when making left turns? I have been hearing a pretty loud grinding/squealing sound when I make left turns at speed and also sometimes when I first turn on the A/C. It started somewhere between 20k - 30k miles and seems to be getting a little worse now at 35k miles.

Is there a howto anywhere on replacing the belt and pulleys? There is almost zero space to get any tools or hands down to the pulleys without taking apart half the engine bay.

Not going to step foot in my dealership again if I can avoid it. I've had nothing but problems with them from the first time i took it in for an oil change and they put in conventional oil instead of synthetic. I didn't know it until the next time when they charged $100 instead of $48 and the only difference was the part numbers for the oil.

$13.50/qt for Mobil 1 Synthetic

Last time I checked the oem belt is like $90 from mitsubishiparts so my dealer would probably charge $200 for it and not cover it under warranty since it's be a wear and tear item.

I have about 35K miles on my EVO. Bought it used with about 28K, not sure how hard it was ran before. I have not tracked, only use it as daily driver. I was driving across country and my belt went out at about 34K. The dealership charge me close to $200 to change the serpentine belt. The informed me that one of the idler pulleys is worn out an has ridges and cracks on it, because they are plastic. I am about to get them replace for some new and then just get them changed every 30K which is when the serpentine belt needs to be checked for ribs, frayed or cracks. New preventive maintenance for me to do at every 30k along with everything. The price is worth it for the piece of mind, now that I now what can happen.
