what clutch for 500-600 whp?

Hi Guys,

What clutch should one be looking at when building a motor putting out about 500-600 whp?

Spec 3+?

I want something that "feels" stock, but can just hold the power...

Thoughts?

This is what I am on currently making 500WHP.Combine this with the aftermarket Clutch Master Cylinder and my X at full tilt banging gears shifts more like a corolla then a diesel truck. I would guess and say pedal pressure is 15-20% lighter than stock on this setup...

The ACT Street Clutch Kit provides a moderate and consistent pedal feel, smooth engagement, significantly improved durability and increases the torque capacity to 512 ft. lbs. for the Heavy Duty Pressure Plate and 573 ft. lbs. for the Xtreme Pressure Plate.

Dave, alot of us use the ACT 6 puck sprung with either a turned stocker or a streetlite flywheel. by no means is it stock feeling though. it is a heck of alot cheaper that the exedy twin. but it also is more of an on / off switch, either your in gear or your not. the hold is 650 ft/lbs TQ with the HD pressure plate. best prices i have found is MAP for them. EVO DAVE did a write up on them. he was sponsored by exedy for his other evos but decided to run this setup. i cutrrently have 10k miles and i am still on the stock CMC. just my suggestion. good luck on your search and CONGRATS on your new job (paid hobby).

The on/off feeling happens because of the lack of a marcel? spring that stock or stage 1 clutches have.

I think the ACT with the Master Cylinder will give you the best feel and def holds the power. With full spool coming on at 3500(ish) in my car, it shudders the car and never have I had the clutch slip.

Dave, i believe that is the reason for the on / off. i have not had a puck style before this one, only disks. my pressure disk is sprung, not solid. there is no chatter from mine. i do have a Magnus CMC in the garage for just in case, but so far no issues. the exedy, you might as well do the cmc that day, not a matter of if but when with them. another one to check is clutch masters fx 400. i have never driven this one, but those few on here have liked it.

Another vote for the ACT 6 puck...I am running it with the streetlite flywheel, works great. It will suit your goals just fine.

It just takes getting used to, but after a while its not bad at all to drive.

In my experience the on/off switch experience comes from a puck style clutch and not from a lack of a sprung hub. I previously had a Single disc Spec Stage 3 6puck sprung design, and it was an on/off switch and I hated it.

Switched to an ACT HDSS, full-face sprung clutch with Streetlite flywheel, and it's been 10-times better, similar to stock just grabbier when you need it.

I don't have an X but just sharing my experience.
