Typically you will get more when selling privately, but most people are
in a rush and dont care to lose money on a car if they can get a new
one right away.

biggest reason is the tax break... typically can get the savings in taxes from what extra you would get by selling it private party... and with WAAYY less hassle

20k, Evo VIII with 40k miles. Dealers will give you a bit more for the car if you ask. They all know these things sell like hot cakes used. I bought my VIII for 29k 4 years ago, it still amazes me how well this car held its value!

I think most of it is ease of the transaction. The private party used car market is in the toilet right now for $20K+ cars...or so it seems. Even for a car like the Evo it's tough...and in many cases is even tougher because of the mod factor (people tend to stay away from modded cars).

Having to deal with having to get financing (most Evo buyers don't have $20K in cash) and having to deal with your own lienholders is a major incentive to trade-in.

Damn, thats a pretty good deal? Did you trade the car in or just sell the car to dealer? Which dealer is it?

Well how it works is that the dealer, in my example, was giving me 25k for a ix with 15k miles. I would have saved around $2200 in taxes which means that I really got 27,200 for the car which is about what i paid for it last year. the reason I did not take it is that they would not move from sticker . If I would have sold it to a private party for 27k, I would lose that 2200 in taxes and It would bring me back to the original of having25k as a trade in.
