About to buy an X or a STi tomorrow, I need a hand to hold.. lol
This is a big purchase for me & I'm up in the air about both..
It's Friday night and was at the Albany Mitsu dealer in CA all day today and they had 3 GSR's...
Base price $33,000 +
Aero pkg ($2000)
SSS ($2000)
and Nav ($2000)...
=$39,000 + destination and little stuff
They were asking the MSRP of $40,000 + $3000 markup +tx/licence
We crunched down to $2000 less so $41,000 + tx/lic.
I left on a good note, telling him I wanted to test drive both cars (STi/Evo) to compare.. I left on a promise that I'll be back on Saturday to drive the X after I drive an STi in the morning. (STi is silver w/BBS/fog pkg. and no Nav.. cause the Nav sucks..)
My delema is...
Evo
- Price! $41,000
- Cheapy interior
- "Write me a ticket" styling
+ Good nav/radio
+ FASTKey
+ Mean Looks
+ Seats
STi
- Might not be a "Driver's" car
- Might not handle as well
- Seats
- Not as advanced.. no aluminum panels/no keyless/ no S-AWC
+ Might be cheaper due to no Nav and lesser demand
+ No dealer markup on most STi's
+ Mean looks
+ Under the radar styling
+ Hatchback utility
+ Interior fit and finish (Better plastics)
+ Exhaust note
+ Better Torque feel..?
What should I look for in the test drives?
Either way I go It's better than my Scion tC... which is a great car, just not fast enough..
BTW.. Money is an object for me

You're asking this on an EVO board and expect an unbiased answer?
EVO. Have owned both the STi and EVO in the past and still have the EVO. The newer variants seem to just be logical evolutions of their predecessors with the EVO now being much more DD friendly.
First off, contact Soutcoast Mitsu tomorrow AM and forget paying anything other than invoice. Walk away from any dealer charging a markup. I believe SC is even offering free shipping now so you have no excuses.
Enjoy the hell out of whichever car you think is best for you.

I test drove the STI today.
All I can say is that it is really WEAK. I did not feel any power.
The ride feel is like a Toyota Camry. Soft , quit, and smooth.
If you are looking for a bad boy racer, get the EVO.

+1 to the above statements. After you drive both I think you will be able to make the decision fairly easily. I'm not saying one or the other, but buy the one that you feel suits you better. I don't know much about the new sti's but the X's are responding well to mods after only a couple weeks in the US. If you plan to mod, I would suggest the evo. Actually, if not I would still suggest the evo.

40K is ridiculous for a GSR. There is far more competition on Evos to sell cheap. You will likely get an evo for at or close to invoice at the right dealer. This is very unlikely with an STI right now. Optioned similarly, the evo may be cheaper.
Back on track though, they are different cars. Just the styling differences alone are huge. Go and get in both and see which you like. Driving wise, evo has beeter steering feel, STi is torquier. Stock, handling edges to the evo, modded, they will be different but neck and neck in what they can accomplish. The choice will really come down to personal preferences though
I do disagree with the styling note. The evo (depending on color) is not that much of a ticket magnet anymore. I think the two are on par in that department

Just got Road & Track in the mail yesterday, Evo and STI on the cover. Basically, the STI makes for a little bit of a better daily driver; more torque down low (bigger motor), more practical (lots of carrying space, Evo trunk is SMALL). As a drivers car, it IS better than 95% of the other cars on the road, but can't compare to the X.
So, you need to factor in price, and how often you actually beat the snot out of a car. Personally, I would never pay $2k for a factory Nav system. See what kind of deal you can work on the Evo. I personally wouldn't want the aero package or the nav. $4k is a lot of dough for two things that do very little for me.
One last thing, Evos have proven to be more mod friendly and I think that'll carry over to the new editions.
