I was in the same boat. I was actually looking at an SMG M3 convertible.

Here's what swung me to the X:
- M3 is a coupe and I wanted 4 doors
- vert = no trunk (less than the X!)
- M3 requires servicing of the valves (stage 2 inspection I think it's called). $1,800.
- Repeatedly on the bimmerfest forums people mentioned that the e46 = $500-1000 anytime anyone needed to look at the car.
- I can't spit without hitting some sort of BMW here (Dallas area). Every douchebag has one. I've not seen an Evo, let alone an X this week (other than on dealer lots).

I don't understand why people create opinion threads asking whether they should get an Evo or not on an EVO FORUM!

What do you think most will say?! Create this same thread on a BMW forum and see what they say, lol. Here's a future quote from their fourm "Don't get that ricey crap! M3 FTMFW!!"

uhmm, straight 6 champ not V6, and the 335xi comes in AWD too

anyway, being a BMW owner myself and seeing the trends and stuff. i drive a e46 325 coupe, now i know the power is nowhere near an M3 but let me just tell you one thing

brake job on my 325ci = oem parts plus install = $800.00

brake job on an M3 - oem parts plus install = Almost $2k

Why? because every little thing on an M3 is ridiculous, in the case of the brakes, each rotor is specific to what side, what direction and whether its front or back, its utterly ridiculous.

i bring that up because everything is like that, after market parts are insanely priced (would you pay $2k for an exhaust?)

id either go 335xi or id stick with the Evo

i will tell ya this though, ladies and co-workers love/jelous of BMW's

It's a straight 6, but i agree.

2k flash from Dinan and you're looking at upwards of 370 hp, 400 trqe. They have other mods too, and it's more a sleeper than an M3.

But it really depends on what you want, if you're doing a lot of tracking go Evo, if you're going to be on the road mostly, i'd get the Bimmer, thats just me.

You really need to drive both.

M3 is an awesome car, has a crazy exhaust note, and drives like a dream, but everything is so freaking expensive on them. It's big money to own, and properly maintain one, so just keep that in mind.

I sold my Evo IX thinking I wanted another M3. I put nearly $15,000 in it and it was still not as much fun to drive as my IX or the new to me Evo VIII I replaced it with!!! Some of the guys before me made good points about high prices and what not. The M3 is expensive to mod, you have to be carefull not to over rev them, and maintance isn't cheap. You have to beware of the window regulators and electrical gremlins mostly. Other than that they are a solid car. If you HAVE to have a BMW go with an E36 M3 or the 335. Just my .02's I would obviously say EVO since I sold the M3 for another Evo,mostly because I like the raw side of the car and its abilities!!
