A story of the little evo that couldnt....

So I was in a parking garage this weekend that was underground. I had 5 average weight people in the car along with a bag or two in the trunk, nothing crazy. The inclines to get out of the garage were (if i had to guess) about 30-40 degrees. The evo COULD NOT for the life of it, make it up. I had to have people get out or feather the clutch. The car would try and stall out....

Anyone else experience this? What to do in a situation like this? Mitsu should have really thought of this.

Not surprising. It's low on torque before the turbo spools, and 5 people + bags + steep incline didn't help. You either take the hill at speed or slip the clutch. You likely would have had trouble with most turbo cars and the majority of N/A 4 cyl.s.

On the day I got my X, I was stopped at an intersection were the street I was crossing was raised up about 6-8 feet above the level of the street I was on (country roads). When the light turned green, I got honked at because I couldn't get over the hill!

My wife had a few choice words about the @&*@ty $35k car I'd just bought that didn't have enough power to get over a little hill.

Now I just slip the clutch a bit, because the X is worthless below 3k rpm.

Why is that normal? A civic wouldn't have this problem in this case.

That's funny, I have a IX and my driveway is super steep like 40 degrees or even more. Anyway I have to come in at an angle as to not scratch up the front end, so when I come up the drive way in first Gear it will barely make it up, and I have to slip the clutch just before I get inside the garage. If I turn off the A/C and do the same thing it will drive up with no problem but I always say "I think I can, I think I can" I think it's just the characteristic of the car, cause my friends Evo's, all IX's, do the same thing if they pull into my garage.

No doubt. NEVER had this issue with any of the 4 bangers I've owned.

A Civic wouldn't have trouble if you slipped the clutch until you got far enough up into the power band, which is what you'd instinctively do anyway. You do it when starting on hills all the time.

40 degrees is steep. With all that extra weight, if he didn't take the hill pretty quickly I'm not surprised in the least. I used to have a hill that steep in an apartment building I lived in once and I'd have to down shift to 1st at 15-20mph just to make it up (driving a Civic EX at the time).

I have a steep drive way too and have to slip the clutch a little to make it into the garage. But my redline has no problem. Go figure. I would say there was alot of weight plus a hill and a turbo 4 cycl equals no movement. You should have used the mitsu raider.

i was in first gear. I did tell people to get out, it was the only way to make it up the hill....one of them even started to push as a joke

P.S. I was in the X.
