Difference between Turbo back and normal exhaust?
#2
Here's an excerpt from a great thread called "The "Official" Evo Modding for Dummies" about a TBE
https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=330085
Basic Bolt on Mods:
Turbo-back Exhaust (TBE):
This is one of the most common and most rewarding starting points when it comes to modding. Turbo back means you are changing your dowpipe/cat/midpipe/catback. Adding a full exhaust will open up the airways so your turbo breathes more easily.
Evom has plenty of vendors that offer multiple exhaust combos so you have the ability to pick and choose what you are looking for.
- Evos with ACD require a different downpipe than Evos without ACD (fitment issues)
- As far replacing the catalytic converter is concerned (For off-road use only of course): You can use a straight through test pipe/high flow cat/resonated test pipe.
- 3" is the standard among aftermarket exhaust replacements.
- All exhaust will yield different gains based on design and pipe diameter.
- A re-tune is required to make higher gains out of an exhaust.

The term Turbo-back implies that it is an exhaust that starts at the turbo and goes to the back of the car (the muffler), a cat-back exhause implies the exhauste goes from the cat (the catalytic converter) to the back of the car, and an axle-back exhaust implies... you guessed it, the exhaust goes from the axle to the back of the car.
So with a turbo-back you are changing the entire exhaust piping (with the exlusion of the manifold) and are freeing up the exhaust the most compared to the other options. With the cat-back you are changing just from the catalytic converter to the muffler, this will yield good power but probably not as much as a turbo-back. And with an axle-back you are basically changing the muffler.
And in case you were wondering, the fullest type of exhaust system is a header-back exhaust system which is obviously from the header all the way to the muffler. But because the Evo X is a turbo car with a turbo manifold instead of a header you generally won't see this system, you will however, see different styles of turbo manifolds come out as the aftermarket gets deeper into this car.
