Evo X MR or Ralliart

I'm posting this since there must be others like me who are considering moving from their VIII/IX into either one of these cars.

So I'm curious. If you guys had to choose between a Evo X MR or Ralliart which would you choose? This is strictly a comparison between TC-SST models. Would you strictly choose the RA just because you didn't want to spend the extra $10k? What if the tuner market later finds out that most, if not all, of the Evo X parts are swappable into the RA? And the icing on the cake... the TC-SST transmission ends up getting an upgradeable wet dual-clutch kit and/or the TCU ends up fully integrated into ECUFlash and is fully programmable. Or how about we dream big and hope that the Evo X MR's ECU/TCU can be swapped in!

Current Differences between RA and Evo X MR:
  • ~$10k MSRP less Evo X MR
  • Lancer Fenders
  • Lancer GTS wheel/tire combo
  • Lancer Rear Suspension-type Setup
  • Suspension dampening somewhere between Lancer GTS and Evo X
  • TC-SST has taller 5/6th gears which gives slightly better mileage
  • TC-SST has no Super Sport Mode
  • TC-SST has no Launch Control
  • Lacks Active Steering Column from Evo X
  • Custom Intake Plumbing
  • Smaller Intercooler and Piping
  • Different ECU/TCU
  • Single Scroll Turbo
  • Identical internals. Originally speculated that cams were smaller. Might still be.
  • AWD system from Evo IX (lacks SAYC portion of S-AWC)
  • Curb Weight 130lb lighter than Evo X MR
  • More trunk room without S-AWC equipment under chassis
  • Windshield washer fluid tank under engine hood
  • Foldable Rear Seats due to lack of Rear Chassis Bracing
  • Bluetooth and FAST Key Standard (MR has it too, but worth noting that the RA does as well)
  • Sportback option beginning 2009!

Evo X MR for the COMPLETE Evo experience.

Ralliart if you want to save some $$ and have some power but not the control.

I had a similar decision a couple months ago. Wait til October/November for the Ralliart or get the GSR for $7-8k more.

I got the GSR because of the suspension and better wheels and tires right off the showroom.

The Ralliart will require at least $600 in rubber to be worth a dang.

Also, IMO the SST is a very unknown quantity and I was a bit scared by it. Sure the engine and tranny in the GSR is a new model, but it's not a completely different technology than that's currently on the market.

I've heard other people state that they think the Ralliart will become the tuner's choice because of the lower cost of entry. I tend to agree.

Like I said, is there any other reason besides money that is driving (no pun intended) you guys? I love the styling of the RA Sportback so I'm personally waiting for that. The X MR is great, but assuming the RA can be upgraded with X parts it's a moot point. The only parts someone probably wouldn't change is adding in S-AWC and the quick rack pinion steering. The IX's AWD system is nothing to sneeze at. Lest not forget the RA weighs 165lbs less than the MR as well. So it kind of lives up to its name of "Evo-Lite."

I totally agree. I think the best point to make is that one can not be wrong with either choice. Getting an Evo engine in an RA is awesome enough as is stands. The biggest hump I can't get over is if the SST will ever be programmable to at least add launch control and a Super Sport shift mode like the X MR has.

This isn't an option on this thread, but I would choose an Evo X GSR in base trim.

For you guys that prefer the a stick over the TC-SST, let's try to put our stick and clutch mentalities aside and pretend for a minute you might actually like some of this trickled down F1 technology.

For which Mitsu funds how many teams to learn from?

Let's just say if/when the sportback comes out, finding one will be like finding a seat in a screening of Space Chimps.

You'll be all alone in the theater!

Go Evo, or go Home. It depends on what you're really looking for though.

Money no object, MR all the way. Real life, Ralliart. ~$10,000 difference in vehicle price, insurance, and practicality, with enough performance to keep me entertained.
