Engine studders almost quits when turn HID headlights on

Do any of you guys have the issue where the engine almost seems to quit for a moment (less than 1 second) when turning the HID's on. This only happens when first turning them on and only happens maybe 1/2 the time.

Honestly not sure what that could be, I don't have that problem what so ever (knock on wood).

Maybe someone can chime in on this issue.

Its normal for the lights to dim after turning on your headlights. If it dims too much to the point you cant see em too well then you have a problem.

I would load test the battery, and make sure that the alternator is putting out what it is supposed to.

I test drove a GSR that had a dead battery on the lot. The build date on the car was in May. I don't know how long they let the car sit with a dead battery but if a battery sits around very long at or below 11.5 volts it will sulphate really bad.

I would look at getting an ADC battery charger, they all desulphate your battery on maintenance mode, and are a good investment for battery maintenance.

Norterntool.com for one carries them.

Good luck

these are such negligible issues. they won't bother you. the ecu bugs will until you have them fix but it still is a solid all around car.

Although I dont have an X, this same problem happened on my VIII. Check your battery terminals. My positive clamp was super loose.

Battery has nothing to do with it...battery is only used during start up. Unless he is having an issue starting the car, it shouldnt be the battery. Everything after start uup is run off the alternator...just check the alternator if its not putting out what its suposed to there you go......

My car is an 03 with aftermarket ecu and it does that too. RPMs drop when the HIDs are turned on.

Headlights don't create that much of a load. There's gotta be something else going on.

The inrush current for a VERY SMALL fraction of a second (maybe 10 ms) on HID is typically 20-30 amps for each ballast. For 2 ballasts that would be 40-60 amps. I bet the alternator is not more than 60 amps rated, the battery would have to kick in after that. Granted that is a very short period of time but could still be affecting the ECU or something.

It would cause a very short duration voltage drop down to maybe 12-13 volts. When the alternator is running (charging) the electrical system should be around 14.5 Volts + 1/2 a volt.

After that initial short period inrush spike the current drops to maybe 5-10 amps (depending on design) for each ballast then ramps down to about 3 amps each after maybe 30 seconds to 1 minute warm-up to steady state operation.

I had my car reflashed about a week ago and it still does it.
