Evo X or Supra MKiV RZ 1993 JDM import
#17
All those people telling you to buy a Supra aren't the same people who are going to be stuck trying to sell a very old car to people who cannot get financing to buy it.
Gigantic financial risk.
Anyone who loves the Supra that much clearly has not driven one. Any Evo 8/9/10 is absolutely on a whole other level than a Supra in terms of driver enjoyment and practicality.
The Fast and Furious days are over.

So you're comparing apples to oranges? Yes, they're two totally different cars in terms of performance and driving aspect. But how do you figure it's a huge gigantic financial risk? Please enlighten me.
Considering the limited numbers in which the Supra were built...how is it any worse than owning a Accord made back in 93? If anything it's much better than most cars of that year. Look at the RX-7 it can be had for dirt cheap in fairly good condition. Compare that to the same year and shape Supra...it's fantastic as far as resale value goes.
Kinda funny seeing a former Supra owner dead set against this car. Almost makes me wanna think you've never even owned a Supra.

The Supra is ugly, heavy, has **** suspension. It also has perhaps the best Japanese engine ever made sitting in it. And the car in general is well made and as reliable as you can get. But it's a boring luxo-cruiser for guys who like highway runs, internet bragging rights about horsepower, and also for 19 year-old SoCal kids with spikey hair who like to hang out at bubble tea joints. I bought mine because I knew a good deal when I saw it, turned around and sold it for more than I bought it for.
The Evo is everything the Supra isn't: unpretentious, a serious racing car, affordable, practical (try taking that sport roof on the Supra on and off HAHAHA), responsive, fun to drive.
If the OP wants a car to cruise around in that is comfortable with big horsepower get the Supra. But don't dare tell me it's a better overall car than the Evo because it's definitely not.

Is the Supra really as boring as you say it is? I have never driven one nor even sat in one, but I now have the opportunity to buy one... Nevertheless, it looks so much fun to drive so as the Evo though...

Isn't there a new one coming out?
On an OT note, they're two different cars. It all depends on how you want to drive the car and what you want to do with it. The only reason I'd get the Supra if I wanted to restore a car with a few choice JDM mods and make it a garage queen for the purpose of selling it in the future. If you want a fast daily driver/spirited driving/track car then the choice is hands down the Evo.

This is a luxury item, the buyers of Supras should be paying cash, and they do.
I noticed the OP said he would have problems getting financing. If you don't have the cash to buy it, don't.
Although, that is a sweet Supra.

I actually have a similar situation. The difference though, is that I currently own an occasionally driven Supra and contemplated whether or not to sell it to get a daily driver Evo X. Perhaps my situation can help aid you in making the best decision.
I used to own a 04 STi that I used as a daily driver/auto-x/track car. Back in 05 I sold it and got a 98 MKIV Supra TT. I chose the Supra because it was always a favorite car of mine (just like the FD RX-7 but reliable) and fit my lifestyle at the time. Now I have two kids and I want something a bit more practical. I currently drive a boring crossover to work while the Supra sits in the garage.
The STi was more of a tool to me rather than something I was passionate about. I missed the practicality and trackworthiness of the STi but I can't say I ever regretted selling it. I knew that I could always buy another STi (or something newer/better) later but I couldn't just go to the local dealership and get a Supra.
I think that the Evo is tempting because it is the latest and the greatest. I try to ask myself if I would rather have an 04 Evo/STi or my Supra. I can easily say that I would rather have my Supra because the 04 Evo/STi is 'just a car' to me. Four years from now, the 2008 Evo X will likely be 'just a car' to me and the 2012 Evo XI will be the car to have. If I give up my Supra, not only will I regret selling it, but I will get stuck in always wanting the latest and greatest. If I keep cycling through cars, I will end up wasting more money in the process.
Below are the pros and cons of each:
Supra
+modern day classic
+true sports car layout/dedicated chassis
+reliable
+fast (but in a straight line)
+retains value
+insurance ($40/mo)
+dream car
=stylish/flashy (subjective)
=gas mileage
-2+2
-no cupholders
-low to the ground (poor visibility)
-harsher ride (koni yellows/eibach pro-kit/low profile tires on 18s)
-sucks at auto-x without mods
Evo X
+4 doors (practical/kid friendly)
+safer (airbags, AWD, etc)
+better amenities (steering wheel mounted stereo controls, etc)
+fast out of the box (not as fast straight but handles better)
+smoother stock ride
=not as flashy (subjective)
=gas mileage
-insurance (~$120/mo)
-unproven reliability/new design still unproven
-depreciates faster
-just a car to me (not as passionate about)
This has been an ongoing debate for me and I have come to a conclusion for the moment. I've decided to keep the Supra because of the advantages listed above. I know that I would enjoy and benefit from the Evo more on a daily basis but a Supra isn't easy to find. The Supra is a modern day classic that has already proven itself and has withstood the test of time even though it is relatively new. I plan on saving my money so that I can keep my Supra and get the Evo in 2010 or so.
IMO the Evo is a better all around daily driven car. I'd only get the Supra if it is exactly what you want. For me it was a 98 white/blk near stock 6spd with relatively low miles. A stock 98 blk/blk hardtop 6spd would have been perfect but that doesn't exist.
btw, why doesn't the RZ come with the TT brakes?

I think it up to the task too , with reliability.
Since i owned mine , and i never had an issue except this:
brake rotor vibration in the first 400 mile, fixed never came back/ my 8/ and the 4 syncro in my 8 too.
Thats all in the past 5 years in the US, with racing them too.

markpaco: Nice post. Thanks
I have also said that the bank can finance it after I checked with them yesterday.
I think not only the Supra is a luxury item, but so as the Evo. I do not have 25k lying around in my bank account that I can throw on a car! And I certainly do not want to have to wait until I do to purchase my weekend car. This would be my only car loan as my gf is taking care of the other one. It's either going to be a 52K (inc. taxes) evo with a 10k down payment or a 28k (inc. taxes and importation fees) supra with a 5k down payment.
