Question Excessive smoke from EVO X

I just bought a new X and am trying to figure out what is going on. I bought the car with 145 miles on it. On the drive home from the dealer I noticed anytime I came into boost, smoke would pour out of the back of the car. It didn't matter if I was going 5 mph or 70 mph, as soon as I open the throttle...smoke. I brought it into my local Mitsu shop and they went ahead and reflashed the ECU based on a TSB related to an idle issue and hesitation above 5,000RPM due to a rich condition. After the reflash I still have a ton of smoke coming out. I have tried to keep the car under 5 - 5.5K RPM until after the recommended 600 miles. So, I haven't really run the car yet (450 miles currently). I have contacted the dealership again and they are looking into a resolution...until then I thought I would post something out here to see if anyone has any ideas. -Thanks

first evo?

The car is rediculously rich from the factory.... Get a tune and this problem will go away some.

As above and go EASY on it until 600-800mi; it is very tight so go easy.

Later, ken

The factory tune is pig rich. I would recommend getting an aftermarket tune also but does anyone know if this would void OP's warranty? I know Mitsu is super ghey honoring about their warranty.

Give the dealers a chance to work it out first. Getting an aftermarket tune will complicate everything because the dealer could claim the tune is the cause of the smoke/problem, as ridiculous as it sounds. After you get things straightened out, then get the tune....

So does this take care of itself after the 'break in' period? Just idling you can smell the fuel. I figure this can be tuned out but a new car from the factory...shouldn't be smoking like this. I will agree with modetm about trying to let the dealership resolve this. I just wonder what continuing to drive the car with this much smoke coming out will do for the emissions (cat, O2 sensor, rings, oil, etc)? Is this a normal thing with the X? Did everyone else just get an aftermarket tune? Surely this isn't the only X having this issue.

Even our lancer GTS was stinky for the first 1000 miles or so, but for a different reason. Now our evox has that same smell accompanied by huge plumes of smoke when getting on the gas. Ive noticed it, people behind me noticed it (along with all the road debris I throw at them from those sticky tires). I am getting a tune very shortly and I dont even plan on it to be solved then, only improved. The dealer cant fix it, just deal with it or get a tune. And stay outta school zone. They are smoke free.

If it's black smoke (even greyish), it's completely normal. On the dyno my car looked like the cat was removed...but I still have the OEM cat installed. The car runs pig rich.

Its normal... try some stuff to lean out the Air/Fuel mixture. Put in a drop-in air filter and you'll notice a little less smoke and pick up some horsepower.

overall that smoke is normal. It runs really really rich from the factory. There isn't anything the dealer can do. It will lessen a little after a 1000 miles, but not much. I say get your car back and enjoy it.

I guess I am having a problem dealing with a brand new car blowing this much smoke and I haven't even really gotten into the thing yet. Makes me think of the old days driving my 1978 Trans Am ($1,600) that left so much smoke behind it you could follow me home an hour later... Maybe one of the two dealerships I contacted will have an answer, shortly. I imagine they will say it is normal (as everyone here has pointed out)...I guess then I will have to look at a custom tune or something. And yes this is my first EVO. I just sold a STG-2 STi to get the X. Never had any issues with the Subi...still...I love my X. Thanks for all the responses.

OMG your evo is bad ....now give it to me.

The X got dual mufflers so I would guess it will smoke more weed.
