I remember reading somewhere that its advised to disconnect the battery before installing an intake. Is it necessary?

yes, so the ECU can reset the fuel trims. I believe you're supposed to reset the battery, then let it idle for 10 minutes, and finally turn the car off and then back on.

Do you have a link to your statement or is it from hearsay?

I didn't disconnect my battery when installing my intake, UICP, or exhaust. I haven't had any problems.

4. Reassemble Vehicle
a) Position the inlet pipes for best fittment. Be sure that the pipes or any other components do not contact any part of
the vehicle. Tighten the rubber mount, all bolts and hose clamps.
b) Check for proper hood clearance. Readjust pipes if necessary and re-tighten them.
c) Inspect the engine bay for any loose tools and check that all fasteners that were moved or removed are properly
tight.
d) Reconnect the negative battery cable to the terminal.
e) Start engine. Let car idle for 3 minutes. Perform a final inspection before driving vehicle.

This is from the AEM CAI install directions. So not hearsay.

Oh and here is the link. Page 12.

You should get in the habit of disconnecting the battery for any install. You never know what could happen. It only takes like 10 seconds anyways...
