Weird Clicking Sound at Idle

My Evo has a weird "click, click, click....." sound at idle. It is coming from the front of the engine. It sounds kind of like a pump operating. What is that? Is it normal?

Thanks,
Gullie

If it's continuous tick-click, it's most likely the timing chain (no timing belt).
If it clicks a few times when you first start the car, then it's just self-tests.

Those are normal.

Hope this helps...

Perfectly normal, although I think it shouldn't be so loud. I can hear my 09 Lancer idling over top of my 95 Tacoma, when standing in front of the Tacoma with the two cars next to each other. The ticking sound is extremely prominent.

Like everyone else said, it's just the injectors firing and it's normal. Mine definitely didn't make this noise for the first few hundred miles, and the day I first noticed it I was bugging out.

I don't know about your sounds, but i can tell you my car sounds like its got severe valve slap at any rpm's It's been into the dealership several times now and everytime they tell me that MMNA said they can't fix it till something breaks. So as the other evos in town say... I'm stuck with my turbo disel till something breaks.

and yes.. i have sat next to another X and there was NO sounds coming from that motor.. and yes it was running. My car didn't make any sounds when i bought it. I noticed the noise at about 5k miles and it has gotten progressively worse. I'm at 11k miles now and you can hear the ticking inside the cabin with the windows rolled up now.

I got the same problem. Asked the dealer bout it and they said it was normal. They all sound that way after 5000k or so. PITA tho.

I love my car but it is so buggy it isn't funny anymore.

I just dropped my car off at the stealership today again to have it checked out. The service manager told me personally that its bad enough he wants to replace parts. So who knows... He also told me if they said not to fix it he would give me the number to MMNA so i can open a case and protest them not fixing it this time around.

My car is the only one out of ten x's that makes any sound. three of us are all over 10k miles and mine is the only one doing it. So yeah.. its a problem.

i got called from the dealership earlier and they said they pulled the head and found a bent lifter ( Which is EXACTLY what i said to the the first time i took it in). It's being replaced and they are confident that it was the sound i was hearing. I'm really glad they let me drive the car for 4000 miles after they pulled the head the first time. At least its getting fixed and there wasn't a problem.

Is this the same problem but not as bent of a lifter or is it just the injectors like everyone else thinks?
