"The Mitsubishi Electric navigation system in the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer ranks highest in customer satisfaction with factory-installed navigation systems, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Navigation Usage and Satisfaction Study...This marks the first time since the inception of the study that a system supplied to a non-premium model has ranked highest."

It's an impressive factory navigation, it looks and performs great.

Ya, def look into non-OEM units. You can get all the features the Mitsu unit has plus more for the same price, and it'll work with the rest of the factory setup. Shop around a bit, figure out what you want out of the unit. Any local shop should be able to install aftermarket stuff with no trouble.
If you're looking at spending top dollar, check out the Kenwood Excelon DNX9140. It a 7" screen, 30gb drive, two usb and AV ports, bluetooth, DVD player, true 5.1 DSP sound processing, and Garmin's GPS GUI. It can tune Sirius and XM sat radio. If you have a smartphone, you can stream internet radio to you car speakers Big Last.fm fan here! Thats about $1700. You get a lot more than the $2200 OEM unit!
You can get units similar to the OEM one, feature wise, for under $800 installed.

If you have the setting just right the stock SSS sound systems sounds great. Most aftermarket NAVI units have more features and are cheaper than the OEM NAVI. I have the Kenwood Excelon DNX8120 i believe and it is great. You can even use the stock amp with this unit. If you disconnect the battery for any reason the stock amp will default to off. There is a post on this already...Just search for it.I think it is in the How TO section.
