Question Residue on exhaust tips?

I noticed a black residue on the exhaust tips today. Is this a sign of oil consumption?

My evo has 1k miles on it. I broke it in per the manual although the car had almost 300 miles on it when I bought it so I don’t know how it was driven before I got it.

Use/get some Terminator Spray (get it at Target or Wal Mart), spray it on the exhaust tip, let it sit for a good minute - 2 and then use a terry towel and whip/scrub off the residue. And IT SHOULD work.

No.. it's just a sign of the car running pig rich from the factory...

Stock tune is super rich, at every tip-in you can see black smoke from tailpipe...
And, if you pay attention, you can also feel that power delivery is not so smooth over 4500 rpm: you can feel hiccups due to the extremely rich mixture.
Rich mixture is normally used in WOT to keep exhaust temperature within safe limits, especially on turbo enines (because excess fuel, evaporating, subtracts heat; this also helps against knocking), but in this case I think they exagerated...

Do you know any reasons why Mitsubishi stock tuned the EvoX pig rich? This might even make it more difficult for EvoX to pass smog checks.

I read it was to make the car safer. Running rich will obviously prevent your car from running lean while you push it. Thus preventing your car from blowing up. Maybe for some other reason too They have stocks in oil companies and want us to buy more fuel??

Thanks. Good to know. I was little concerned because like I said the car had some miles on it when I bought it. They drove it up from Indianapolis to Chicago because they didn't have the color/option combo that i wanted.

Save up some cash and get it tuned. Best bang for the buck.

Fuel fog intercooling = fewer warranty repairs from lean conditions frying motors. This only kicks in on WOT, it misses the emissions test, so they can pass CARB, too. Since most owners (from Mitsu's perspective) won't custom tune, this is cheap insurance for them.

FWIW, I use my soda blaster to clean this crap off. Doesn't damage chrome, peels it right off in seconds and washes away with water with harmful waste. It may be the only "green" thing in my garage.

I bought my Evo used (6k miles), and it's got the stock tune. I got an emissions test done on it and it showed 2.25ppm CO2 when the maximum is 20ppm. However, I had my 15 year old truck done the same day and it only had 1.56ppm

As someone else said, it's for safety reason. In this way, even if someone puts a non-stock intake and so on that lean a little the AFR, engine is still well in the rich side. But for sure, the stock AFR is not the optimal one!

And, about emission, this extra AFR enrichment is active only in open-loop (so with high load and/or rpms): during the emission homologation driving cycle, the engine runs with small loads and rpms, so it is usually in closed-loop with stoichiometric AFR (14,7 for gasoline).
Bye
