Oil smells burnt with less than 3k on it?
Hey guys I decided to give my oil a quick check last night while installing my UICP and the oil is pretty dark and smells burnt. I always heard that meant it was time for changing... it's got the AMSoil 0w30 in it and I was planning to take it to 5 k before changing it since it's more expensive than the Mobil 1. Should I change it or is it not a big deal? ... and no the car is NOT driven hard daily.. once in a while is all.

Remember a turbocharged car will always run more fuel for cooling factors and other reasons, also blow by will always be there no matter how good they measured the rings.
also on top of that the X seems to have a little issue with fuel dilution, i guess is not known yet the root cuse of the problem, and thats why you are using an oil that can handle the abuse.
My dad uses the SSO 0W30 and i noticed when he pours it its a little darker than the ATM or ASL. i always use ATM10W30 in my IX and ASL5W30 in my wifes Altima these are a little cleaner looking, but remember the SSO 0W30 has a heavy adiive package and then you add fuel to the mix=darkened
Without doing an oil analysis iam very confident you will be ok, and i back up my decision based on the high TBN number the SSO has right off the bat is like 14+, so you have plenty oil additive left to combat harsh enviroments.
When you get a chance and drain it run an analysis and post it in here it would be intersting to see. I KNOW WHAT WE ARE GOING TO SEE

Methodical,
My oil before the first oil change smelled like gas. After that first oil change, at 1.5K miles, never noticed the smell.
I have 6.8K on my 08 MR now, and I've now done 3 oil changes. Just had the dealer do another oil change a couple of days ago, when I took it in for the fuel return line recall. The tech commented that my oil was pitch black, and wondered when the last time I changed it was. I told him I changed it at around 4K.
No big deal.
