I dont have an evo quite yet but I did have that exact problem with my current car. I solved it with my 5 dollar ghetto solution from Home Depot. I purchased 2 springs that I have attached where my quarter panels meet the trunk. Each spring is about as wide as my finger and is about 2 inches long. As soon as I hit my level to open the trunk it props up a whole inch.
I had to do that because my trunk stopped popping up altogether a few years ago and I did not want to spent a 100 dollars to fix the problem. Best part about that spring is that when I close my trunk there is almost no resistance so it closes normally.
