Removing the spare tire - thoughts?

I did it in a previous car, but I'm not sure how bright of an idea this would be. Do we have auto-club type coverage from Mitsubishi with the Evo? My concern is not having a spare tire when I get a flat.

I'm thinking of removing it because I want to mount a power inverter in the trunk space and honestly there are not many places in the trunk I can see mounting this thing, so the spare tire area seems to make the most sense.

Only in the US the Evo comes with spare tires and tools. Others comes with tire repair kit.
That is one reason why is the JDM or the EU or the AU etc evos are lighter.

I took the spare out and only put it in when I take trips longer than a couple hundred miles out of town. AAA as a backup but when out of town not having a spare, if needed, can lead to some serious down time opposed to lugging the extra 30lbs around.

Even if a coverage from Mitsu is there (I don't know how it works for MMNA), I think that it will not cover if you have a puncture and you have not the spare tyre with you.
Spare tyre is part of the equipment of the car, you cannot remove it and pretend that Mitsu cover you if you have a puncture... It's like removing lights and pretend that they bring you home at night...

Rob, do you know all the other reasons about the difference in weight between US and EU?
- spare tyre and tools
- crossbars
- ?

I removed my spare.

Haven't gotten a flat yet!

heh, I just bought a can of Fix-A-Flat. If I get a flat, I'll probably be out of luck, but oh well

no i dont know all, but there is a US rear crash beam at least 15 kg ...
Which you guys dont have.
So if you put the spare tires + tools and the rear crash beam difference together you are pretty close already.

the rear crash beam must go then
It is very disappointing if you ever will hold it in you hands. You will realize what you were dragging around the very end of the car .

i dont know about messing up the wheel. i had fix a flat in my front left wheel on my lancer for like 4 months (dangerous i know) the TPMS may have been messed up i could see that happening but it still read when i had low tire pressure accurately. and when i took the wheel off, other than a bunch of gunk the wheel was fine.

But you suggest to completely remove it or replace it with a lighter one (for example the EDM one)?
I think it's not so safe to run on the road without the crash beam, what do you think about?

ive contemplated taking out the spare..but i figure its one of those..as soon as i do i'll get a flat..but if i dont i never will. i guess the tire repair kit is a good idea to keep just in case.
