370Z to Evo X.....Anyone??
#16
I went from a 350Z to and IS350 (for about 6 months) to an EvoX. the only things I miss about my z is low rpm cruising on the highway (but still has enough power to pass easily) and an *** out burnout coming out of a turn every once in a while... and so far i've been getting kinda crappy gas mileage, got 23-24 in the Z, get 18-20 in the Evo

The X is a car that is so easily able to gain power in that it gets addictive. I always say "this is the last thing I am doing" now at 382 whp I still want more lol. I do love the looks of the 370 and sort of the reverse of you, it happened to be my second choice... I just wanted something more safe, as I have a wife I now think about in case of a side collision vs my old 06 RS.
Power vs. price, there is no comparison, the Evo just takes it hands down. The interior the Z is most definitely nicer. If that doesn't bother you then you'll be ok. The paint is cheap on the X, but it is an all season car, it's great if you do have kids... or if you just want to go out and have a little fun with some friends. The Z holds one other person and that's it.
I would always pick the X, but it has it's issues for sure.

The 370z blind spot is horrible, and the ride is too harsh dont get me wrong its a true sports car but for DD i wouldnt recommend it....for me its a weekend car/ track car... If i have the money i wouldnt mind having a 370z and evo in my garage you got the best of both worlds for rallying and a time attack car.. But being practical the evo is the winner, 4 door, super AWD and turbocharged....good for all season drive...

Too many comments to reply to so I'll try to hit every topic.
DRIVEABILITY
I have actually never had any issues driving the Z. Yes, there is a blind-spot but I've gotten used to it. Pull out of parking spots slowly. And keep the side mirrors angled outward a little more than usual. And that's it. I drive it absolutely without any problems.
Another thing, when I test drove the X, I found it to be a little bit of a harsher ride. Now I don't know if it was the road that I was on that enabled me to notice every bit offset on the pavement, but it definitely felt harsher. The Z seems to have a slightly more progressive spring setup (even though I don't think it has progressive springs).
Driving on wet roads is not a problem either. Nor is it when it's below freezing. Keep in mind that I still have the stock summer tires. Of course if I wanted to break loose, I could. But I have a brain (functional) and common sense not to. It's all throttle control and knowing when to drive spiritedly and when not to. Heck, I used to own an '00 Civic SI and I was able to break loose on wet/cold roads as well if I wanted to. So weather conditions haven't really mattered for me.....EXCEPT ice and snow. In those cases the car never sees public roads. I have the ability to telecommute (aka work from home) when need be, so those extreme conditions were never an issue for me. Plus, besides commuting to work, I really have no other need to be out in those conditions anyway.
I also don't like how the GSR has no 6th gear. The engine revs are too high on 5th when cruising above 70mph or so. The engine in the X also seemed a bit noisier and that's probably due to the turbo sitting right on the other side of the firewall. I'm not talking about the sound when you floor it and you hear it spool up. I'm just talking about regular driving...cruising. I've never owned a turbo charged car so perhaps that's a normal characteristic and I'm just not used to it.
I'm not really crazy about the Z's gear ratios for regular driving. This car is meant to be driven at higher speeds (50mph+) where you're in 3rd gear or higher because it's kind of sluggish in the lower ones. 1st and 2nd suck ballz. I feel like I have no advantage over any other regular car on the road. But once I get into 3rd, 4th, 5th....it's a different story.
INTERIOR
I find that the Z has a nicer interior. It feels more refined and better materials. Plus every bit of information (console, dash, etc.) is designed with the driver in mind. It's all right in front of you. But it's a 'sports car'. That's how most are. We're comparing apples to oranges. I wouldn't expect that from a sedan. The X however does have better front seats. The Recaros hugged and felt much more sturdier than the ones found in the Z. But is that really a good thing for a DD? I don't know. As some have pointed out (no brainer), The X is also better because you can take more people with you. I also like the Rockford Fosgate that comes with the SSS EVO package. That thing is pretty kickass. Trunk size is about the same, cubic inch wise. But rears seats is a plus for extra cargo too.
MODIFYING
I do like how EVOs require less money (perhaps 1/2) to achieve the same results of a Z. As I mentioned on an earlier post of mine, I spent $1,250 on a CBE that got me roughly 20whp (per company and independent dynos). For about that same price, you can achieve about 80whp with an AMS staged package....correct me if I'm wrong. The most people are getting out of their Zs, N/A is 330whp. Keep in my that they're around 270whp stock but rated at 332whp at the fly.
LOOKS
I like the exterior looks of both cars equally. Both don't require any body kits or lip spoiler to achieve a kickass look. In fact, I prefer the EVO w/o the factory ground effects. All you need on both cars is a nice drop and some fatter wheels/tires.
I'm still undecided. A Mitsubishi dealer not far from me said that they would give me 25K for the Z. I'm like waaaaat!!. That's like a 10K loss in 1.5 years. That's really tough for me to swallow.

I'm trying to on Craigslist.....just as a feeler. No bites so far. I hate this method though because it can take a while. I'm kind of an impatient fella. I like things done right away.

Dang, I love that Z! Way better than the 350Z. I used to have just two doors but ever since the change to four doors awhile back I just feel I got have my foor doors! So much more room, giving others a ride isn't a pain in the booty, I have no doubt that you'll have room for the kids in the X. The only bad thing is trunk space....the performance is there though you won't regret the change.

I have an '09 370Z. I love the car. It sounds, looks, and performs great.
Then, why am I considering an X? Well the wife is expecting and I decided that keeping the Z will make life a little annoying because of impracticality reasons. The wife drives a crossover. While I'm sure we could manage with our current situation but having an additional car with rear seats would be a huge plus. I'm sure those who already have kids can agree.
I'm considering the X because I would still like to have a high performing car, and it definitely fits that category.
So my question is has anyone made this switch from 370Z to EVOX? What are your thoughts? Any regrets? So on...

I say.. test drive an EVO X to see and feel for yourself.. at the end of the day its your decision. I have no regrets trading in my Z for the X. Hope this helps!

i was about to get a 370z, nismo 370z, or evo x mr
i test drove the 370z and the evo x mr but not the nismo
to me the z feels like the tc which disapointed me. i like the interior of the z though. feels like a racecar inside but when i sat into the evo. i was sold instantly. took it for a spin, drove it hard a little, and made some turns. i was sold right away. (of course a used evo x though)
i haven't ever regret the evo. i love this car. the extra seats are just awsome and its the one of the few 4 door cars that look sexy. chugs gas though

In my opinion, it's hard to take a $10k bath for two extra seats. Not trying to sound harsh but that $10k could be better utilized for the baby. You'll adapt to only being able to take your wife's car. Honestly, most families with one child only use one car 90% of the time. Is $10k worth being able to fill in that extra 10% of time that could easily be filled by your wife's crossover?
Something to think about.
