Oil change 5w30 or 10w30 for the Evo X

Just want your opinion it says on the manual to use 5w30 only but usually on my other cars the manual says 5w30 when is cold and 10w30 when is warmer so basically gives you a choice. So do i have to use 5w30 or can i use 10w30 cause i prefer the 10w30. Please if you guys could tell me what your using on your evo's and am i safe to use 10w30 or just stick with the 5w30. Thanks

first number = 5 is just a cold weight of the oil. So in the winter the 5 is good , in the the summer if you want you can use 10 to have a bit more protection after start up . first number is basically how easy the oil flows- protects when its cold . In the very simple way to put it.
The second number is much more important.
In racing we use sometimes 50. But on the street the 30 should be enough.
Unless it is extreme heat out side or you put the car a longer period of time under high stress in high heat.

this is a simple explanation

10W-30 here since that's what my dealer uses and recommends for all Evos (VIII, IX, and X) down here in Texas. If I still lived in Minnesota I'd run the 5W-30 though since it gets MUCH colder there during the winter. You really can't go wrong with either and real-world you'd probably never notice a difference. I ran 10W-30 in my IX up in Minnesota year-round and even when it was -15F in the winter the car would still start up with big cams, big fuel injectors, and a mini-battery kit.

I would put in what the manual says to put in. I mean they did build the car and I would think that if they say 5w30 is ideal then 5w30 is ideal.

fwiw I just bought Amsoil 0w30, I decided to stay with the mits oil filter... I read somewhere that's what ams uses on all their builds.. so, works for me.

There was a thread somewhere with a PDF from FP with some tests they ran and recommended oils. What the manufacturer recommends was not one of them.

Put in Rotella T 5w-40. It compares with Motul's oil (trust me) and is readily available.

Since you're in NY and the overnight lows are still in the 20's, I'd personally recommend 5w30 for cold starts. Once it warms up, the "30 weight" means they are both the same anyway. Your engine oil cap also says 5w30. 10w30 is ok in warmer climates, like southern CA.

Afaik, user manual says 5W-30 weather/temperature regardless.

For those of who byo oil/filter to your dealer with 10W-30 had trouble for refusing (or verbal warning) oil change when your X was still under warranty?

this.

if you look at your manual it shows a chart of when 5w30 is good for your specific vehicle, and when 10w30 is good. 5w30 is good at a huge range of outside temp while 10w30 is only good for climates that are warmer. here in the NW it's 5w30 all the way, all the time for mine.
