OK I'm sorry but even though the Elise is a great car its handling characteristics are inflated by so many people. Some people have never driven one and it was just word of mouth that it's so good. I drove an Exige a couple of months back owned by a friend at a track day and it handled good but it tended to understeer and the overall grip wasn't road creasing and nor was the steering, it wasn't bad in fact it was great but not as epic as some people put it. I think a well setup E46 M3 has better steering.

I actually prefer the porsche steering as a best I ever drive.
Yes I drove lotus and bmw too.

I would have to agree on Porsche, the 997 GT3 RS has a sublime steering feel and feedback, the whole car is just....RIGHT Porsche sure know how to make a proper driver's car. I wish I could own one though

I drove a Porsche 968 which is a front engine 4 banger. Interesting car with nearly V8 torque from low revs but the steering was phenomenal.

When I first got behind the wheel of the Evo, I immediately was reminded of the 968 steering. It's like 95% as good with just a hair better feedback from the Porsche.

The Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3's did make the steering a bit lighter, but not by a huge amount, compared to the Bridgestone Potenza RE050a's.
I agree though, the steering is fantastic in the Evo X, it's got a great ratio and responsiveness, it's just a bit light for me, that's all.

I have spent a lot of time behind the wheel of other cars. I've noticed that my favorites, in terms of steering feel, all had heavier steering, which seems to make a really huge difference in how involving it feels to drive.

I was considering removing the power steering, but with the quick steering ratio and the heavy front end in the Evo X, it'd probably be almost impossible at low speeds. The Elise gets away with it because there's only about 700lbs over the front wheels, where us Evo guys have usually over 1700lbs over the front wheels.

Does anyone know what kind of steering pump the X has? Is it electronically controlled and speed-variable, or is it constant?

You guys are getting a bit carried away. While the Evo has a nice short ratio & its very responsive, I don't get much feedback from the steering. Feels very "electronic".

Well the X definitely feels different than the VIII or IX. I would say it is a little more "assisted" which could be taken as electronic.

The X definitely handles better though. I like both models and want to either own a IX or do a mirage conversion after I pay the X off.

I drove cars without power steering, if the car isn't moving its very hard to turn the wheel, but if the car starts to slowly crawl the steering wheel moves easy.
