Possible purchase - advice needed

I'm sorry if this is the wrong section to post under.
I recently totaled my 2005 SRT-10 Viper Truck (long story) and am in great need of a new car/truck. I used to own a 2004 STI and had a blast driving it around. I came across a listing on auto trader that was the IDEAL car I wanted. All too good to be true...then it hit me "branded title". A while back I bought a 2005 Z06 with a salvage title. It had been in an accident and after having a tech check it out I bought the car. I had a total blast with it, drove it for a year and a half and was time to move onto something new.

Anyways to the point:

the car im going to go look at tomorrow.

2008 Evo X with 10500 miles on it. Almost brand new.
I call the dealer and they happen to be open tonight.
I ask about the title and was explained it was a class 1 water damage.
All floor mats, carpet, seats and electronics were replaced.
I highly doubt they replaced the trans and such and i'm worried about rust and water in the trans and other things.

I got them to drop the price down to $17,500.
If I asked them to change all the trans fluids and such and had them do an inspection with my friend along (cert ford tech) and things seemed to check out is it something I should still just walk away from? 17k for an 08 Evo X with 10k miles seems like such a killer deal. Im 27 years old and just had some major dental work to the tuneof $27,000 done im about dead broke. I could handle $3000-$5000 worth of repairs in the nexy 6 months but that would be pushing it so the car would have to be in good working order. Id really love the car but I need some quality advice before I get myself into something stupid.

I know this is an Evo forum but I found an 2005 STI with 45,000miles clean title for $15,999 that I liked and a 2004 Honda S2000 with 40kmiles for (I forget Ithink it was around the same $15,000). I also considered a 2004 or 2005 M3 both with about 60,000miles both around $20,000. I'm looking to spend $17-26k atm. I'm saving up for my dream car in about 5 years from now so i'm just looking for something fun for the time being. The only draw back is I llive in Utah and while we only have MAYBE 15 days (more like 5-6) where the raods are even remotely poor some days they are (im sure snow tires could do thejob) which is why the08 Evo X and 05 STI weremyfirst two choices.

I would love some advice from you guys on the Evo (branded title guy said there was 1-2 inchs <class 1 flood damage) in the car that they replaced carpets/seats/electronics.

Am I better off just buying the 05 clean title STI (but god only 10,000miles for $17,000 on the evo?)

Also note: Ill be driving the car for 3-5 years and am NOT worried about resale value.

Thanks you in advance.
Rj

They had a white one that I was looking into. But the car has a lot of electronics.

They are all Jersey flood cars.

I would stay away. I am from a city that floods; in fact, Houston just got flooded today. I have heard about horror stories of owning a flooded car. Believe me, the price justifies how bad the condition is or will be. STAY AWAY; our cars got a lot of electronics and fixing it won't be fun.

I would think that resale value would be a big thing to keep in mind if you know you're only keeping it for a few years. No reason to throw away money.

If your only keeping the car for a few years I'd get the STI. It's going to be hard to sell the Evo with a branded title.

they shouldn't have replaced all that crap..

they should have sold it as a car that can be striped and race-prep'd..

that way you could have bought it for 10-12, taken all the bad stuff out and put what you NEEDED back in.

oh well

apart from my rhetoric - I think this deal is a no-go..

Ya....im not worried about the resale value I just dont want to spend $10,000 the first year fixing things that are broken. 1-2 inchs of water above the floor board didnt seem like that much (Yes, I know how much **** there is in those 2in). I dunno if the 2005 STI with 50k miles is slightly less ... clear title... thena 08 Evo X with 10miles..... I guess ill go with the safe bet. Ive had 3 cars over the 750WHP mark and tons in the 550-650 (A)WHP range. I'm just looking for a 400-450 WHP DD for the next few years. The 04 STI I had was just catback / intake / chip. I'm guessing with the 05 STI I can spend $2500-3500 with COBB and hit the 400-415 WHP mark i'm looking for and still be able to put another 50-75k (miles) on the car (put aside my driving style and conisider someone who semi-babies the thing) and not have tons of repair bills? Obviously id rather have a 08 Evo X with some bolt-ons then an 05 STI....but again im just looking for a low HP DD before I sang up a GTR (or maybe a brand new Evo and spend the extra money on parts who knows) in 2-3 years from now.

My understanding of the 2005 STI is its stock parts can handle 400-450 WHP without needing upgrades....say 15-17k miles a year.....and it won't be tracked (I still have an old gutted purpose built 3000GT for that). There will still be plenty of hard driving...just minus any type of launch you would see at the strip.

Sorry im rambling on... ive just made some poor and quickly made decisions in the past and for the next few years I financially can't afford to do that (had some huge almost six figure bills the past two years). I just need a fun DD that can handle the overall maybe week of "real" winter weather Utah gets (I drove a Z06 all winter long one year).

Anyways thanks again guys for the input even though i'm not talking more about an STI then an Evo (I love them both in their own ways and like I said may end up the built Evo route then the GTR route a few years from now)

1-3 inch flood damage = too much risk even if they claim electionrincs have been replaced.

05 STI with some bolt ons with 50k on it will handle another 75k miles on it with much less of a chance of huge bills due to unforseen problems with whatever the water may have done? Yes? STI Yes?

Both cars are the same price give or take.
Clean 05 STI stock 50k miles
Branded Level 1 Flood (1-3 inchs) water damage with 10k miles on it.

if those are the jersey flood evos... stay the hell away from them. I have seen the pictures of what they were in and they should have been declared totaled. I wouldnt pay more than 10 grand for any of those jersey evos.

it wasnt 1-3 inch flood, it was more of a flood up to the driver side window...

Ok - thank you very very much for the info. It turns out the two cars here in Utah were the (or other) cars from NJ. Drivers Side window is a lot different then "hardly even touching the front of the seat if at all"
As much as I prefer the looks of the Evo and other aspects I guess its the 05 STI with 50k on it. 400-425ish AWHP STI should be plenty of fun.

I guess maybe a 2014 Evo will be in the books insted of the GTR. FULLY built Evo sounds like more fun after driving a stock GTR (2010) and a friends 2009 660 (given it was tuned on C16) AWHP Evo.
