? Why? Because some of us have other launching methods besides holding the revs at 5k and clutch dumping?

I was always taught a good launch will always consist of a bit of burnt clutch in an awd car.

Does it load the engine to build boost when it's holding those RPMs, or is it just free-revving the engine?

Okay I'll clarify a little to what you call launch control. What it is like everyone said is a way to prevent people from blowing their motor. However many tuners such as cobb or other tuners usually put another rev limiter on your car to create a "two-step" I my self have over 200 launches on my 2008 Evo GSR. I will tell you it works very well at 5.5; however i up'd mine to 5.8 to prevent wheel hop so my tires spin alot of the line. I used to drag a lot but now the army had other plans so it slowed my fun down. I will say it works very well but if you dont do it correctly you will blow your tranny or diff. Im running about 342.7 to the wheels and its fine at 25lbs of boost. You just have to make sure you push clutch in completely until the car moves a tad then you want to push in the clutch literally a Mili meter that way it doesnt grab but you dont want it far away hold the clutch there then slam the gas, if you hold it more then about 5 solid seconds it will bounce to redline so be careful. Once you ready slowly let out clutch until it grabs a little then let go completely it will take practice. Been through three clutches in mine just draggin bout 80 launches a clutch roughly. Hope this helps bud....

I am still very confused, is the stock 5500rpm Rev Limiter same as launch control (2 step) people talking about? Reason I asked this is because I found some youtube videos with people demonstrating 2 step and some will make the REV LIMIT bouncing noise and some will have smooth HIGH RPM noise and just stays there.
In this Example you see the cars RPM holding at 6000RPM Smooth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1JswTir0Ws

In this Example you see the RPM Bouncing

Are they both launch Control?

I don't get why everybody always says 5500....it's 5000, and yes it can be used as launch control. it's the same system that was in the 8/9.

alright ive talk to a couple of tunners and the new 2011 x has something in ecu that wont allow it to launch to protect the motor there are tunners trying to re make maps now to help with launch, u can raise rev limitter but it doesnt help that much. in 2008-2010 there is no problem but the 2011 and most likely 2012 the ecu is made alittle diffrent with a tune. if someone has broken the code please post and help

Dumb question. When reving it up and holding it at the 5500 rpms is this bad at all? I know sometimes after I left off then that the rpms take like five seconds or so to completely die down and it sometimes sounds a little strange. is that normal? i just assummed cuz it had boost built up and was just letting it release?

^^ Yes, launching is hard on the clutch and will shorten its lifespan.. its probably not good for the drivetrain in general.

And yes, the RPMs seem to drop very slowly on this car.. I'm pretty sure that's normal though.
