help on evo x traction settings

Should the AWC settings have any effect at all on steering response?
In light to moderate snow, in snow mode, my steering feels less responsive to my inputs than in gravel mode.
Also in gravel or snow mode, in snow or heavy rain, occasionally I'll hit a spot where I still have traction but it feels like the car is digging in on one side and pulling me sideways.
Anyone have any ideas about this.. just my imagination?

On the gas, the center locks sooner and harder, and stays locked longer, in snow or gravel than in tarmac. A car with a locked center is harder to turn (as any drag-racer with a center spool will tell you). Ergo, the car is harder to get turned in snow or gravel. Not just your imagination.
