Found it.. it's pages 3-92 & 3-93 in my manual.
UPSHIFTING
For the best fuel economy and performance in using your manual transaxle, upshift as listed below.
DOWNSHIFTING
It is recommended that you downshift to a lower gear when needed to maintain the desired speed, according to the table. Avoid downshifting at too high a speed. The engine may suffer damage.
To maintain a safe speed and prolong brake life, shift down in 2nd or 1st when descending a steep hill.
Downshifting is also important to avoid "lugging" the engine at too low a speed, such as when turning a corner or when driving up a steep hill.
Recommended downshifting speed
DRIVING PRECAUTIONS
For the best fuel economy and performance in using your manual transaxle, upshift as listed below.
Shift point | Upshift speeds
1st gear to 2nd gear | 15 mph (24 km/h)
2nd gear to 3rd gear | 25 mph (40 km/h)
3rd gear to 4th gear | 40 mph (64 km/h)
4th gear to 5th gear | 45 mph (72 km/h) |

Recommended downshifting speed
Downshifting speed | Shift point
Under 20 mph (32 km/h) | Shift down from current gear to 2nd gear.
20 to 30 mph (32 to 48 km/h) | Shift down from current gear to 3rd gear. |
DRIVING PRECAUTIONS
- The table below shows the maximum recommended driving speed for in each gear. Do not drive near or at these speeds for prolonged periods of time.
Shift points | Maximum possible driving speed
1st gear | 37 mph (60 km/h)
2nd gear | 55 mph (90 km/h)
3rd gear | 74 mph (120 km/h)
4th gear | 99 mph (160 km/h) |
- Do not use the gearshift lever as a handrest. This can result in premature wear of the transaxle shift forks.

1st gear 37 mph (60 km/h)
2nd gear 44 mph (90 km/h)
3rd gear 74 mph (120 km/h)
4th gear 99 mph (160 km/h)
1st gear 37 mph (60 km/h)
2nd gear 44 mph (90 km/h)
3rd gear 74 mph (120 km/h)
4th gear 99 mph (160 km/h)
1st gear- 40 mph
2nd gear- 59 mph
3rd gear- 79 mph
4th gear- 104 mph
5th gear- 150mph
Here's the speeds at the stock (GSR) rev limiter of 7599rpm:
1st gear- 43 mph
2nd gear- 64 mph
3rd gear- 86 mph
4th gear- 113 mph
5th gear- 163 mph
Hold fourth deep baby, because fifth sucks!

All of those numbers land exactly on or very close to 6000rpm. 4th is actually at 6200.
I've always thought a manufacturer's never exceed speed was their rev limiter, and even that can be exceeded in some applications safely. Both the 4G63 and 4B11 manual transmission cars cut right at 7600 (7606 and 7599 to be exact per Ecuflash).

For me it’s not so much what rpm I shift at, but how quickly I build rpm’s.
For daily driving I go easy on the throttle, build rpm’s slowly and shift around 3.5k - 4.5. When approaching a wide open freeway onramp, I’ll occasionally get on it and WOT up to 5k-6.5k. Rarely do I ever reach 7k.
If I ever track my car, I’ll probably hit 7k in every gear.
